When the history of Christianity in the 20th century is written Trevor Huddleston will certainly occupy much space. A major figure in the battle against apartheid in South Africa, his book Naught for Your Comfort (1956) changed the perception of liberal Westerners about what was really going on in that tortured land.
Huddleston was an Anglican monk and thus subject to the rule of obedience. He was called back from South Africa when he was at the height of his intellectual and physical powers. He was made Bishop of Stepney but like too many clergymen was tainted by accusations of sexual impropriety and as a result suffered to the limits of human endurance. In his retirement, he lived at the mother house of his order in Mirfield, Yorkshire, but his last years were not happy ones as he faded from public attention and underwent periods of deep depression and uncertainty about his fundamental beliefs.
Piers McGrandle's new biography of Huddleston is groundbreaking in its analysis of what makes men great. But it also brings the reader down to earth in showing how profoundly complex are the motivations of Christians who have wide influence. As a study in human psychology, McGrandle raises issues which may be applied to many so-called "saints".

Review
“…. splendid biography.” — The Mercury (South Africa)
'..I [once] wrote that Trevor was a great man who deserved a proper appreciation. I think McGrandle's work does that: there is objectivity and understanding, campassion and criticism.' January - April 2006 (David Craig Tanzanian Affairs)
" McGrandle is at his best in unravelling the complex personality that huddleston undoubtedly was." "...provides a sympathetic and rounded portrait of Huddleston...worth reading for insight into his character." (Nicholas Southey)

An Anglican Saint
By benjamin
Trevor Huddleston was one of the heroes of Anglicanism in the mid-20th century. It may be true that Anglican theology as such died with the ecumenical movement and the Second Vatican Council, but it is equally true that during this same time period a number of Anglicanism's finest and most important figures arose. Trevor Huddleston was one such figure.
Piers McGrandle has given us a fine portrait of Father Huddleston; it neither revels in Huddleston's glories nor wallows in his failures. Thus, it is neither a work hagiography nor a work of expose. Rather, we see Huddleston as a fiery monk from England who was a member of the Community of the Resurrection - arguably Anglicanism's most historically and intellectually influential monastic order. Thus, Huddleston was both High Church/Anglo-Catholic and, just as importantly, a socialist as well. He had, therefore both theological and political acumen - and it is not too much to see him as an activist.
Huddleston's real importance was as a tireless opponent of apartheid in South Africa. He knew the young Desmond Tutu well before Tutu entered the priesthood; he later became friends with Nelson Mandela, as well. His activities, however, had him recalled to England, which he used for a time as his home base for his political activities - the most important of which was his book Naught for Your Comfort, which was about South African apartheid. Perhaps unsurprisingly, as with many great figures, Huddleston became borderline obsessed with his mission; it became all that he lived for. His later work as a bishop in Masasi, Stepney and Mauritius shows that he truly was an international figure and deeply involved with the development of Anglicanism around the world. However, his heart was in Africa, and even if his latter days were permeated by his own embittered frustrations and regrets, one can at least derive some satisfaction from the fact that he lived to see the end of apartheid.
Desmond Tutu, the former Anglican Primate of South Africa, provides the Foreword for this book; Rowan Williams, the current Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury, provides its afterword. In between these two tributes is the life and work of a man who is everything that a late-modern saint should be: a union of flesh and spirit, blood and tears, nobility and failure. McGrandle is a notable biographer, and it is hoped that his book will bring Huddleston's life and witness to a new generation.
