They grieved over the death of children with a palpable poignance and were galvanized by the cause of abolition; one sister eventually quit the Society of Friends owing to its ambivalent stand on slavery. Not knee-jerk liberals, these women heard a call to active participation to free all persons-male, female, black, white-from the fetters of an opportunistic society. Sections of these letters enjoyed publication earlier in the century.
