An introspective and moving poetry

These selected poems of Yaakev Glatshteyn are translated and introduced by the poet Richard Fein. I do not know Yiddish well enough to assess the translation, so I read the English translation simply as original Poetry. Many of the poems are small lyrical confessional poems wonderfully readable and in many cases moving. Fein has selected from the various volumes Glatshteyn published during his lifetime and there are many outstanding poems. All I can do however in this review is cite a few of them hoping that they will somehow give a taste of what the Poetry is about.
Glatshteyn was one of the foremost Yiddish poets in the United States, a part of what is roughly called 'The Third Wave' of Yiddish poets. Often using free verse forms and highly introspective his work, as I understand it, was a departure at least in degree from what had gone before. Like all Yiddish poets in America he faced a dwindling audience with the years. He made only one visit back to Lublin to visit his aging mother and spent all his life in the United States. One of the most moving poems in this volume is his poem 'Brother Benjamin' who was murdered in the Shoah. The Shoah is a central subject in Glatshteyn's later poetry.
The poem about his brother is written as a series of questions to God.
It concludes as follows:
"Beloved-holy-God
What were You up to with my brother Benjamin?
What was the point in creating him
if you meant to deny him
even the least bit of happiness?
Why did you violate his whole life?
Did You really want him and his wife
to live for the day
they would lead their only son
to the marriage canopy of the chimney
where You burned them all?"
As I find this volume so outstanding I would like to cite one more poetic sample, this time of a whole poem.
"My Tent"
Embrace me with choking devotion,
language mine, like a jealous wife;
confine me to my tent;
let the world never grasp what I meant,
even to the best translation.
Let them exclude me,
diminish me, disparage me.
I don't care if I'm not in their number.
Summon me, irrevocably,
to your destiny.
Let no one coax me from your arms.
Take my word.I don't want to be universal.
When I take my leave
I will become a pillar of cloud,
a gleam of light,
above our small sanctuary.
