just what's needed

Eamon Duffy's thoughtfully drawn, spacious intelligence makes everything he writes worthwhile. He's a magnificent writer - the prose alone is enough to compel a read. His ideas are firm, but supple and surprising - he's no integrist. His bright touch is just what's needed in the new liturgical movement, however it turns out. Duffy's is an erudition that widens every prospect along the way. This book's a joy to read for all those reasons, and its argument for a once again organic consideration of liturgical orthodoxy is convincing. The chapter on the mass Sacrifice and the liturgical life of that central Sacrament is limpid, even elegant, and breathes a calming fortitude. Heady stuff, and beautiful writing, &ditto the chapter 'Why The Pope?' - Duffy is a historian with a cooly enervating style that positively captivates in strikingly memorable approaches to English prose, all without the least pretension, and with expressive clarity. Faith of Our Fathers is a diamond exposition of the Catholic faith that for many will prove a bellweather of recovered riches.

Excellent and Heartfelt Apologia of Traditional Catholicis

In this book, Duffy presents 19 essays on various important subjects within Roman Catholicism, such as Marian devotion, Purgatory, and the place of the Pope. Duffy explains and argues for the retention and rediscovery of traditional (read: pre-Vatican II) practice and belief, convinicingly but not exhaustively. Duffy's fresh perspective will make the average Progressive Catholic re-evaluate his or her positions on traditional doctrines and practices of the Church.

All in all, I highly recommend this book for any person interested in the Roman Catholic faith, and especially for any Roman Catholic looking for a starting point in (re-)discovering his or her roots.

A persuasive treatise on a pervasive food...

A fun, crammed compendium on how this food became ubiquitous--like the apple in our diet. It's forms and functions are seemingly unending. You'll be surprised how much and in what ways you've consumed it. Stock photos, quotes, recipes, postcards: a loving scrapbook and historical tale of corn. If you're a cook, you'll love it. It's like a year of Gourmet magazine with every issue on a different facet of corn. A fun gift to give.

Well-written, with detailed information on all almost all aspects related to corn

The author is descended from folks who grew corn on the plains, and their story is woven into the start and end of the text. There is a great deal of detail on ritual and traditional uses of corn by Native American peoples, from the Toltecs and Aztecs and Woodland peoples to modern tribes, and especially much on the uses of corn as a food, in fact so much on alternative ways of making some dishes (such as bread-like dishes) in various cultures that many readers would skip over these details. The chapter on the mechanization of corn process also has lots of detail but is hard to follow for those of us who don't know the function of many of the agricultural tools: the author doesn't describe them. Similarly, while the author mentions the six general types of corn (sweet, dent, pop, flour,...), she never explains the differences among them, and there is limited information on corn genetics. The author describes the surprising number of industrial uses for corn in some detail:the book has lots of information on all aspects of corn but some useful details are missing. I was especially interested in the conflicting theories on the ancestry of corn in a section titled The Corn War (at the time of publication, there were theories that teosinte was either not the ancestral grain or not the only one). One error: in the text on Chaco, the author states that Pueblo Bonito housed more than 1000 people; it is now accepted that it housed relatively few. A limitation of this book is that it was published in 1992 and hence has nothing on modern developments related to GMOs. There is an extensive bibliography but few references within the text indicating which sources contain more information on a topic. Of course, a reader can go to the web for a particular topic (such as the types of corn), but it would be useful to have it in the text.

Excellent reference, poor illustrations

I do a lot of geological work in New Mexico, and have traveled around the state for several years. Robert Julyan has done an excellent job of summarizing the physiography and history of New Mexico's mountains. Also, he's done an admirable job of summarizing the geology of these mountains in a way that is scientifically valid and I think is understandable to the general public. Each section (broken down by mountain ranges and/or individual peaks) includes good information on accessibility. An introductory section on geology and the human history of New Mexico's mountains is very good. Including a detailed reference list was a good idea, and will be helpful for anyone that wants to learn more about specific areas. For these reasons, I highly recommend this book as a reference for anyone that plays and works in these mountains- I wish that similar books would be written for other states!

Unfortunately, I can't give this book 5 stars because of the poor maps and other illustrations. Users of the book will need to pair it with a good atlas of the state for finding their way around.

That being said, this book is a great value.

Looking for a New Mexican John Muir

I have always hoped to find some New Mexican equivalent of John Muir's work on the Sierra Nevada, an account that is both informative and inspiring in its writing. This book is not it. I believe Julyan when he says that he has loved the mountains all his life, but he has not succeeded in transforming that love into the sort of text that plants itself indelibly in the heart of the reader. Instead we get a hit-and-miss guidebook useful for determining the elevation of specific peaks and the geological composition of various rock formations with just a tiny smidgen of history thrown in like a patch of lichen on a stone face. This may appeal to those readers who prefer to measure beautiful things with a yardstick. But I am not among them. I came looking for Meng Hao-jan and found Fodors.

About the Author

During his seminary education and internships in German Methodist churches, Joerg Rieger became increasingly aware of deep-seated problems in church and theology, which helped to perpetuate unjust structures like gender inequality and exploitation of the environment. Moving to the United States where he received his Ph.D. in Theology and Ethics from Duke University, Rieger became further aware of issues of racial discrimination and economic injustice and of how church and theology were complicit. Neither the conservative, rules-based Christianity of the Methodist church in which he grew up nor the liberal theology of his early theological education provided the resources to address such forms of systemic oppression. Rieger's work is based on the recognition that more radical and faithful visions of Christianity were needed, and that such visions were already emerging from grassroots communities both locally and globally.

Rieger continues to develop this more challenging vision of Christianity in close collaboration with colleagues both nationally and internationally and with emerging grassroots movements. In Dallas, where he taught at Perkins School of Theology from 1994 to 2016, he was active in the religion and labor movement. In 2016 he was named Distinguished Professor of Theology at Vanderbilt University Divinity School.

Rosemarie Henkel-Rieger is an organizer and lecturer. Most recently she worked for North Texas Jobs with Justice and the Dallas Central Labor Council (AFL-CIO). She is also the founder of the Texas New ERA Center/Jobs with Justice. Her previous lives were spent as a molecular biologist, a Montessori teacher and home educator.

About the Author
Robert L. Kane, M.D., holds an endowed chair in long-term care and aging at the Minnesota School of Public Health. The author or editor of more than twenty-five books and three hundred journal articles, he has analyzed long-term systems both in this country and abroad

Joan C. West, an educator for over thirty years, has been an elementary school classroom teacher, mentor, staff developer, and workshop leader. She is currently an adjunct professor at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue, New York, where she supervises student teachers in their field placement. She was the principal caregiver for her mother during the episode described in this book.

Great book for family members

My parents are just entering the phase of needing some kind of elder care. This book was a big help, since a geratric specialist was the co-author and son of the woman this book was about.

Unfair

I work in a Long Term Care Facility. This book is extremely unfair to the staff who are trying their very best to provide a quality life for the elderly whose family are unable to provide care. The "mother' discussed by the authors is a very challenging individual. She has behaviors that do not respond to love and care. She is the type of person who causes staff to become burnt-out. And then it is so typical that as staff are attempting to provide a safe environment, family show up and complain about the situation. We do not "throw away" elder adults that are angry and abusive. Staff, including myself are in this job because we love older adults. We do not make much money. We could have gone into sales or technical fields and doubled our salaries. I am very proud of caregivers who spend their day changing diapers interspersed with giving hugs and reassurances to older adults who are lonely. There was not one nice thing said about staff in this book written by very angry family members who undoubtedly are feeling guilt over not being able to care for their mother at home.

Read This Book

This book should be mandatory reading for every healthcare professional and for all nursing students. It is excellent for anyone dealing with or who will deal with aging parents. I continue to buy copies and share with anyone I find enduring the journey through long term care. Our family has just finished our journey through the failed system. I have personally had 20 years experience as a nurse in long term care but nothing could have prepared us for the journey. Unfortunately nothing can take away the pain and suffering our father endured for those months in long term care facilities. However this book put in words many of out thoughts and much of what we experienced. I have read it several times and read it out loud to anyone present when we were trapped in similar circoumstances. Our journey was similar in many ways which is tragic. Everyone with parents still living should read this book. We must move together to make a difference and change this failed sytem.

Great shelf reference

Although rather dated, the very basic principles of carpentry make this an excellent bookshelf reference. You won't find the latest gadgets, such as truss spacers or hurricane clips in this book, but you can lay out a custom set of stairs if you have neither Google nor the software to do so.
