Sasha Solomon is having a bad day. Fired from her job as PR director at an Albuquerque HMO, she is dealing with an ailing mother and trying to figure out the origins of hallucinations that include conversations with her cat.
Sasha heads for Clovis, a small town in southeastern New Mexico, where she'll bid on a project for the Chamber of Commerce. While there, she will check in with her widowed friend Mae King. Mae, a local dairy farmer, is clearly out of sorts and shows Sasha the reason. There's a body in one of her stock tanks--a Singaporean aviator stationed at Cannon Air Force Base. Who killed him and why? What was he doing on Mae's land? Why won't she go to the police?
Sasha must clear her friend's name, find the murderer, and land the PR job with the Chamber of Commerce within a week. But there are other forces at work who will stop at nothing to keep her from the truth. Sasha soon discovers that there's a lot more to Clovis than a dot on a map.

Murder (and other mayhem) in US Southwest
By B. G. Ritts
Pari Noskin Taichert's first book is a quirky cozy with just a dab of Rod Serling thrown in. Sasha Solomon is a PR consultant who has, as the book opens, been fired from her job but conveniently has a job interview lined up in Clovis, NM. Nothing like good timing -- maybe. While working up a prospective proposal for the Clovis Chamber of Commerce (to get some of Roswell, NM's UFO tourist dollars) she helps solve a murder. Along the way, Sasha has hallucinations and a talking cat, and works through problems with a friend she visits in Clovis, the friend's children, local characters (and they are legion) who are anything but ordinary, law enforcement, Far Eastern beliefs, UFO sightings, aliens, etc. Whew! It's a memorable combination that Ms. Taichert has deftly woven together.
Unquestionably different than anything else I've read, "The Clovis Incident" seemed to start slow, but I think that was my getting into the rhythm of Pari's truly breath-of-fresh-air voice and her first person narrative. I've found that I'm particularly drawn to Sasha, who's a bit of a wisecracker with a keen sense of humor that reminded me of (but in a more refined sort of way) Katy Munger's Casey Jones character. I also like Sasha's cat, Leo da Cat, who has a 'know it all' personality.
I hope Pari Taichert has another book in the pipeline because I REALLY want to read more of her work -- and to see what other insights Leo has to offer! "The Clovis Incident" is a fun book -- do yourself a favor and read it.

More Sasha, please!
By Kindle Customer
I've read all the Sasha Solomon books and I love them, especially since I claim NM as home. This character was full-blown from the start and grows more complex with each story. The stories themselves are equally well thought out and executed.

One Heck of a Whodunnit
By G. Vance
What do aliens, a murdered pilot, a wise-cracking PR professional and a not-so-sleepy town have in common? They're all part of the wild ride we take in "The Clovis Incident," Pari Noskin Taichert's witty read about an abnormal turn of events in the tiny town of Clovis, New Mexico.
Sasha Solomon, the savvy but imperfect protagonist, is off to Clovis to land a job promoting the area's attractions. While in Clovis, the public relations practitioner hooks up with longtime friend Mae, a Clovis native and rancher. But the Mae she encounters is shaky and nervous, and persistent probing by the un-shy Sasha reveals why: There's a corpse with its head stuck in a cattle trough on Mae's land. Not only that, but the usually steadfast Mae reveals that she is being visited by space aliens who kidnap her, let her go, then kidnap her again.
With the plot deftly established, Noskin Taichert unfolds her tale against the backdrop of Clovis - the kind of place whose slower, interesting rhythms urbanites yearn to understand. The story line moves quickly in this fun, engaging read. We learn about public relations, which is neat; and we get to look closely at Sasha, whose imperfect humanity we find refreshing, even reassuring. (She hallucinates, she has a talking cat, and she shoots aerosol-propelled whipped cream into her mouth as comfort food.)
With its quirky twists and turns, The Clovis Incident is one heck of a whodunnit. Read it for adventure; read it for fun. I can't wait for Noskin Taichert's next effort.
