This authoritative and comprehensive account provides a rich analysis of the complex issues that brought about the demise of Yugoslavia and the ensuing fraticidal warfare. Based on the author's extensive travels in the region, news accounts, and the author's interviews with politicians, scholars, and religious leaders, the book pays particular attention to the role of religion in fanning the flames of interethnic hatred.

From Library Journal
Mojzes (religious studies, Pennsylvania's Rosemont Coll.), a scholar of religion in Eastern Europe, has found fertile ground in tackling the horrendous conflict engulfing the former Yugoslavia. The aim of this well-organized book is to explain the roots of the fratricidal war. Mojzes treats the history of the region along with the myths both sides use to justify their respective nationalisms. In doing so, he weaves together religious and economic motives to paint a broad picture of the unbridled disregard for humanity that has cost hundreds of thousands of lives. An ethnic Croat, he does not conceal his disappointment and frustration at what has become of his former homeland. His conclusion offers a proposal for ending the conflict that comes across as a cry in the wilderness in view of the international community's feckless response to the raping and carnage. Recommended for academic and larger public collections.

From Booklist
Mojzes was born in Croatia and raised by Methodist minister parents in the semiautonomous Serbian state of Vojvodina; he and his wife moved to the United States in the late 1950s. In analyzing the horrors that have replaced Communism in the former Yugoslavia, Mojzes draws on interviews he conducted during recent trips to the Balkans as well as scholarly monographs and journalistic reports in English. The author's particular concern is the role of religion and religious leaders in aggravating the conflict, but he also offers a generally even handed account of the "mytho-history" of the nationalities contending in the former Yugoslavia; probes the roots of the disaster; assesses blame; weighs alternative outcomes with and without foreign military intervention; and proposes what he calls "coercive diplomacy." Ecumenical as Mojzes strives to be, he was unable to travel into Bosnia on his recent trips, and his analysis of the former Yugoslavia's Muslims is perhaps the weakest of his six ethnic profiles. Still, Yugoslavian Inferno brings into focus issues muddied by the propaganda of various sides, and it demands that the world's leading powers recognize the complexities any long-term solution must address. Weak at places, interesting at others
By Edward Bosnar
This book is somewhat flawed in that the author dwells a little too much on the religious aspect of the wars in the former Yugoslavia. However, he is quite correct in pointing out the culpability of religious leaders among the Serbs, Croats, Bosnian Muslims and others in fomenting mutual intolerance. Another problem is that his conclusions about how to create a lasting solution to the conflicts (massive Western intervention, basically) seem a bit naive given the record of outside involvement (from the UN to NATO). The historical analysis is also a bit weak. More interesting are the author's insights and opinions of the various Yugoslav peoples, because he speaks from the point of view of an insider, i.e. as someone born and raised in Yugoslavia. Thus, readers can get something of an idea of how the various ex-Yugoslav peoples view each other's nationalisms - because Mojzes is equally critical of all nationalisms in the former Yugoslavia. This makes "Yugoslavian Inferno" an interesting supplement to the literature on the former Yugoslavia, despite its obvious flaws.

Extract from Books on Bosnia, London 1999
By quintin hoare
A well-intentioned but seriously flawed book for the general reader, by a Yugoslav American of unusual background (his parents were both Protestant ministers in Vojvodina). Tries to spread the blame for the war as widely as possible; ends by recommending Western military intervention, against all sides, in order to effect a partition of Bosnia.
