Ancient relics--stone tools, bones, footprints, and even DNA--offer many clues about our human ancestors and how they lived. At the same time, our kinship with our human ancestors lies as much in their sense of humor, their interactions with others, their curiosity and their moments of wonder, as it does in the shape of their bones and teeth. And the evolution of human behavior left no direct fossil traces.
Children of Time brings this vanished aspect of the human past to life through Anne Weaver's scientifically- informed imagination. The stories move through time, following the lives of long-ago hominins through the eyes of their children. Each carefully researched chapter is based on an actual child fossil--a baby, a five-year- old, a young adolescent, and teenagers. The children and their families are brought to life through illustrator Matt Celeskey's vividly rendered paleoenvironments where they encounter saber-toothed cats, giraffids, wild dogs, fearsome crocodiles, and primitive horses. Their adventures invite readers to think about what it means to be human, and to speculate on the human drama as it unfolds in many dimensions, from social organization and technology to language, music, art, and religious consciousness.

Review
Children of Time: Evolution and the Human Story" by Anne Weaver is one of the best books about evolution for young people that I have ever read. Combining very accurate information about our ancestors with delightful stories, and Matt Celeskey's marvelous illustrations, make this a book I would recommend to all readers who are interested in Pre-history.

Finally! A terrific children's storybook about human evolution.
By Linda Wilshusen
I highly recommend this children's storybook about human evolution by paleoanthropologist Anne Weaver. Drawing on up-to-date science, Ms. Weaver crafts six engaging and accessible stories about humans and our hominin ancestors from about 2.5 million years ago to the present. The stories represent a likely picture of daily life for these early humans, and each story is followed by a section "The Science Behind the Story" which provides easily understood background information from the scientific record. The illustrations are appealing and also draw on science for anatomical accuracy. While we can never know the exact circumstances of the lives of early humans whose remains we've discovered, this book is a welcome addition in the generally meager offerings for children (in this case about ages 5-9) about human evolution. Well done! - Linda Wilshusen, author of The Everyday Primate blog

Beginner's introduction to evolution
By aron row
Paleoanthropologist Anne Weaver attempts to translate the story of man’s development and also to describe his behavior based on earliest existing evidence to a youthful audience. This is a daunting task which challenges those young in age to imagine the many millions of years over which shards of traces of hominin activity have been unearthed. Painting stories of the probable lives of these ancient anthropological finds, the author attempts to humanize and develop a link of kinship between the young reader and the relic clues that survive and tantalize the imagination of how these early people behaved and reacted with one another as well as their environment. Each story chapter beginning with the Clovis tools has a science abstract that summarizes the justification for the fictional account. Other chapters cover fossil sites at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, Lake Turkana in Kenya, Dolni Vestonice in the Czech Republic, and Amud in Israel. The transition of the Homo species from habilis, to erectus, to sapiens neanderthalensis, to finally sapiens sapiens is explored. While the stories may appear subject to conjecture the vivid illustrations will definitely attract the reader’s attention. This is a gallant attempt to convey the complex story of human evolution based on the current record to a young readership.

Fantastic viewpoint for Children

Written from the perspective of children, this has been a great book for the children of my Elementary class. Much better for them coming from children than from a third party adult!
