Robert M. Young's critically acclaimed 110-minute film Alambrista (1977) depicts the harsh realities of Mexican life on both sides of the border. Following the birth of his first child, a young Mexican slips across the border into the United States in search of the American dream for himself and his family. He finds heartbreak, exploitation, and disappointment, but also friendship, affection, and help along the way.
When first released, Alambrista received critical praise and a number of awards, including a Camera d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. For the University of New Mexico Press release, a distinguished group of scholars has packaged a new director's cut of the film with a book of essays devoted to immigration and the U.S.-Mexican borderlands. These scholars include Albert Camarillo, Richard Griswold del Castillo, Daniel Groody, Teresa Carrillo, Howie Movshovitz, Bill Ong Hing, José Cuellar, Cordelia Candelaria, and the editors.
The director's cut includes new scenes, an improved sound track with a totally new musical score by "Dr. Loco and Los Tiburones del Norte," English subtitles, and interviews with the director and other participants. Also included with the book and DVD is an enhanced CD of the sound track.

Wonderful, multi-dimensional primer on Mexican migration, and a great buy!
By L.
When I purchased this book (with accompanying dvd and cd)for a course I teach, I never expected to get so much for my money: I've just spent the better part of a day exploring just some of the resources it provides. In one beautifully-produced package, it contains the newly-enhanced "director's cut" of "Alambrista" a wonderful full-length feature film first made in 1977, which is still extremely timely and which I believe everyone in both the U.S. and Mexico should see; on the same dvd, a fine documentary on migrant children ("Children of the Fields") and amazingly substantial interviews with filmmakers, musicians and scholars. PLUS, another cut of the feature film, with a voice-over by the musical director explaining the process of designing the new soundtrack. AND, a separate song-by-song, scene-by-scene view of the music. All that, along with the book, Part One of which explores the historical and political context in well-researched, lively essays by such fine scholars as Albert Camarillo and Teresa Carillo: Part Two offers equally valuable essays on film criticism and analysis as they relate to the project. Every single element is profoundly informative, captivating and stimulating: I learned much more about immigration, border and gender issues, filmmaking and music than I ever expected. I can't wait to share the film, and its multimedia exegesis, with my students -- as well as my colleagues, family and friends. All in all, a treasure trove for anyone wishing to better understand migration in these troubled times.
