Wilson's Three Hundred Years of American Drama and Theatre), this excellent work fills a gap while also taking the opportunity to expand "America" to include all of North America. Londre (theater, Univ. of Missouri, Kansas City) and Watermeier (theater, Univ. of Toledo) open the text with chapters devoted to theater of the Maya, the Aztec, and a number of North American tribes, then expand to "new Spain," "new France," the American Colonies, and the Caribbean; and continue with the inclusion of Canada and Mexico up to the present. Like many other surveys that try to cover such enormous amounts of material, this book leaves us wanting more, but it offers an excellent introduction and far-ranging coverage. Felicia Hardison Londré is Curators' Professor of Theater at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and dramaturge for Missouri Repertory Theater, Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, and Nebraska Shakespeare Festival.Daniel J. Watermeier is professor of Theater at the University of Toledo. He is a past recipient of Guggenheim and Folger Shakespeare Library Fellowships.

Need vs Pleasure

One cannot fault the thoroughness and the solid academic underpinnings of this work (part of a series). Certainly, this volume is one which students of theatre history and libraries will want to collect. However, I would not recommend it as a popular history for those who are mildly curious about the topic. The writing is dry and formal and one's attention tends to drift. Best to leave this book to the academics.
