Romo takes us south and we enjoy every minute of it. Beautiful prose that reads like poetry. Looking forward to reading more.

Love the book, and love the author...

Having known (and loved) Ito for almost fifty years, it's hard to be unbiased when discussing his work. His stories are my stories--I'm as fiercely possessive of them as if I had written them myself, because I lived some of them right beside him. Ito has given form and taste and substance to the shadowy world of my memory. Some of the tastes are bitter, but the forms are real, and there is undeniable beauty in the landscapes he has forged out of fear, desires, humor, and humanity. I happen to be the Diana in his story, and he is Ito, my dearest friend.

not for the faint of heart

This arresting collection examines nuggets of border life -- everyday episodes of survival -- to take readers deep into what it means to live around and across this line that is simultaneously real and imaginary. This is a quick read but not an easy one -- I had to stop and catch my breath after every story. Romo manages to cut immediately to the humanity and emotional life of his characters without being cloying or over-written.
