Thorough Work on Biblical Servant-Leadership

Agosto states "The key to the leadership of Jesus was that he carried out his mission in direct contrast to the established leaders of his day" and that he commissioned his followers with the purpose of "providing relief to those who were suffering the burdens of a failed religious and political leadership" (Agosoto, 200). Agosto appears to approach the subject from a background of liberation theology, emphasizing strong action and political/social justice. While social ministry and justice may be an important part of how Jesus led, this cannot be the key to his leadership because it does not capture the richness of the servant-leadership example Jesus left for his followers. C. Gene Wilkes gives a clearer picture of the servant-leadership of Jesus, illustrating seven timeless principles of how Jesus led (Jesus on Leadership: Timeless Wisdom on Servant Leadership, Carol Stream, IL: Tyndale House, 1998, 11-12). Christological servant-leadership encompasses more than the obligation to the poor and the oppressed. Wilkes writes, "A servant leader serves the mission and leads by serving those on mission with him" (Wilkes, 18). Don N. Howell, Jr. writes of three elements found in the life of all servant-leaders: character, motive, and agenda (Don N. Howell, Jr., Servants of the Servant: A Biblical Theology of Leadership. Eugene, OR: Wipf and Stock, 2003, 296). According Howell, the biblical record emphasizes who a leader is over what a leaders does, believing that Christ-like character, motives, and agenda will produce Christ-like action.
Servant Leadership: Jesus and Paul is well-researched with in-depth exegesis and historical studies. For this reason, the book may not appeal to casual readers and may best be suited for those pursuing ministerial leadership or New Testament studies, due to the highly technical language and discussion of textual criticism issues. There are times when Agosto's reference to the issues of textual criticism distracted from the thread of his study of leadership. However, Agosto succeeds in painting a picture of the impact of Jesus' servant example on the people living in first century Palestine. Servant Leadership: Jesus and Paul adds the social justice emphasis to the conceptual mosaic of biblical servant-leadership, which has common themes of submission to God, the proper use of authority, and empowering other leaders.

A Much-Needed Approach to Biblical Leadership

The greatest sin in the countless books on leadership that seek to appropriate the biblical perspective is the blatant "eisegesis" that attempts to draw parallels from Jesus' or Paul's ministry and leadership and modern concepts, concerns, and categories without a trace of critical examination of the text. Agosto's approach, therefore, comes as fresh air in the malaise of literature that crafts a Jesus or Paul in our own image.
Agosto takes an exegetical approach in trying to decipher the style and substance of the leadership of Jesus and Paul, with brief attention to other New Testament models at the end. He methodically situates both figures in their socio-political-historical contexts and then offers an informed and critical summary of their leadership qualities. Agosto also studies Jesus' and Paul's leadership with sensitivity, careful not to read too much into places or sayings. For both Jesus and Paul, Agosto surmizes, the concern for the poor and the suffering, especially one's own suffering, constitute the substance of biblical leadership. In terms of style or method Agosto shows that both Jesus and Paul had varying techniques according to their situations, even though they shared major strategies in common: in particular building and training a team consisting of unlikely and less than ideal candidates.
The deficiencies in the book are minor. Agosto does not often attempt to draw from a large swathe of scholarly opinions on any given text or topic. This results in a narrow reading of certain passages, though never uncritical or insensitive. The reflections on leadership in today's world are sparse, coming only in the concluding chapter. They therefore come across as entirely speculative. Agosto does not allow himself enough space to dig deeply enough, but rather remains satisfied with general observations that leave the reader wanting more. Finally, and perhaps the biggest detractor to the book, is that the prose is flat and detached. This is the biggest detractor precisely because it makes it so difficult to get through a rather lengthy book. While the reader is rewarded with the occasional insight, this reward comes as well-earned after slogging through page after page of unlively text.
Yet all these complaints are, again, minor. Agosto's work comes as a welcome addition to the study of leadership in the context of Jesus and Paul. There is a certain satisfaction and believability about the claims an author like Agosto makes after spending the requisite time to sufficiently work toward these conclusions. While the reader is left with the bulk of the work of discernment to do, concerning how to apply and appropriate these models of leadership in a modern context, perhaps this is as it should be. Readers who are interested in a more accurate glimpse of the leadership substance and styles of Jesus ought to read this book.
