Brilliant Must-Read

What a fantastic premise for a novel, and what a mature piece of work this tragicomedy is. I can see this work becoming a classic text in schools and colleges throughout the Americas.

Read it for the pleasure of getting to know the painstakingly well-developed main character (Whopper) and his intriguing female counterpart (Mija). Watching Whopper come of age and hearing the voices of those close to him is surprisingly pleasurable. The funniest part of the novel is following Whopper at the height of his powers as the Licenciado, the municipal representative, of a tiny rancho in Michoacan. The most unresolved part is the novel's engagement with female sexuality in the rancho. And the author doesn't hesitate to ask powerful questions about the quality of the dreams available to the children of immigrants. These philosophical questions are effectively woven into the novel's confident, satisfying, and commanding story-telling.

Important fiction...

Mr. Montoya's second novel offers a glimpse of the transformative in life--in spite of our efforts to fight it off. Descriptively rich yet interactively minimalist, it is what isn't said that drives this bittersweet tale. Like pieces of marble being chipped away from a shapeless slab, our protagonist, equally shapeless and inert, develops a character etched by the reality of experience and time. That we are more willing and able to understand him is a good thing, the stuff of serious and enduring fiction, and I'm guessing what Mr. Montoya is about. Anybody giving this book a serious read will not only appreciate its craft, but will be a little changed by it as well.

I liked "The Deportation of Wopper Barraza" by Maceo Montoya because I can relate to the immigration mentioned in the novel since I am Latina myself. The novel depicted realistic conflicts that can actually happen to anyone, and it shows the struggles that any Latino can go through. I was left with suspense at the end of every chapter, and I loved how the novel is narrated by all the different characters. I hope to read a novel like this again because I get to relate and imagine what I would do if I was in that situation

I can't believe I waited this long to read this book

I've had this book for several months and recently decided to read it. I was moved by the concept of the soulful leader. The models are appropriate for both the corporate and spiritual worlds and even applicable to my personal life. Eddie and Randy have done an excellent job of bringing their real-world experiences to light and allowing us to learn from their journies. I recommend this book to anyone looking to establish a level of confidence in bringing their faith to their leadership roles.

I highly recommend this for any manager

as a manager myself, I found this book to be uniquely insightful. It is so important to observe and change based on various personalities. No one strategy is appropriate for everyone. Adaptation and change are necessary to manage a group effectively. This book help walk through the ways in which you can make changes without rocking the boat. I highly recommend this for any manager, would be manager or anyone dealing with many people in order to meet a common goal. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will re-read in years to come.

Great start for talking about Christian aesthetics

Richard Harries gives us his take on Christian aesthetics. Is beauty only in the eye of the beholder? How do the classical aesthetic judgments play out in a modern world? Can truth, beauty, and goodness still function as the parameter of critical evaluation? Harries answers these questions in very accessible language. His understanding of beauty as an aspect of God's glory is right on target. He says, "The conjunction of beauty with truth and goodness has its origin in God and is what we mean by His glory. The Bible does not dwell long on beauty in isolation but it has much to say on the subject of glory."

Nice introduction to Art and Christianity

Unfortunately there are comparatively few books on the aesthetic tradition in Christianity, which is sad given the key role creative art has had to play in this faith. From the loving creation of icons in Orthodox Church to the beautiful architecture of medieval cathedrals to the great works of poetry and literature by writers like Dante, Hopkins and Milton, artistic creativity has been a key expression of religious faith for many centuries.

Central to this is the idea of God being beautiful, or as Gregory of Nyssa would say, the archetype of beauty. Harries offers a useful introduction to how Christians have seen God, despite his infinity, invisiblity and incomprehensibility, as the beautiful, along with the true and the good. This work is ecunmical and looks at how Catholics, Orthodox Christians, and Protestants have conceived of the aesthetic exploration of their faith in great works of art. It is a useful introduction to the subject of aesthetics in a theological context.

Kindergarten-Grade 3–Ji-Stu the Rabbit cant stand it when Si-qua the Opossum dances and sings to show off his beautiful bushy tail. Ji-Stu (an annoying boaster himself) goes to Terrapin and then Cricket for help to stop Si-quas boasting. The opossum loses the magnificent hair on his tail, much to his dread. In an additional, original ending to this otherwise traditional Cherokee tale, Si-qua finds uses for his newly naked, prehensile appendage and ends up saving Ji-Stus life with it. Do you see how you have changed? Terrapin asks. Once you sang songs about yourself, but now your friends sing songs about you. This ending alters the rhythm of the story; it feels tacked on and makes a questionable purchase out of an otherwise lovely book. The tale is illustrated with beautifully elaborate and intricate white-on-black drawings and white-on-orange endpapers in style similar to Jacobs paintings in Joseph Bruchacs The Boy Who Lived with the Bears (HarperCollins, 1995 o.p.).–Nina Lindsay, Oakland Public Library, CA

The other animals are fed up with his boasting, so Ji-Stu (Rabbit) enlists Cricket's help. Offering to brush Si-qua's tail just before the big council dance, Cricket secretly cuts off each hair as he wraps the tail in buckskin, telling Si-qua to pull off the buckskin just as the dance begins. After discovering his loss, Si-qua mourns his former tail, but Snake teaches him how to use his new bare tail to coil and hang. Then Si-qua uses his new skills to rescue Ji-Stu from drowning, and Ji-Stu arranges for a dance to honor Si-qua. Duvall's original ending for this time-honored pourquoi story, drawn from Cherokee traditions, softens the punishment and provides redemption for Si-qua's arrogant behavior. The elaborately patterned, intricate, black-and-white ink drawings, best viewed at close range, bring this entertaining, instructive story to life. Karen Hutt

Love the book, and love the author...

Having known (and loved) Ito for almost fifty years, it's hard to be unbiased when discussing his work. His stories are my stories--I'm as fiercely possessive of them as if I had written them myself, because I lived some of them right beside him. Ito has given form and taste and substance to the shadowy world of my memory. Some of the tastes are bitter, but the forms are real, and there is undeniable beauty in the landscapes he has forged out of fear, desires, humor, and humanity. Gertrudis Barceló, New Mexico's celebrated gambler and demimonde of the 1830s and 1840s, was born at the turn of the nineteenth century in the Bavispe valley of east central Sonora, Mexico. Young Gertrudis, who would later achieve fame under the name "Tules," discovered how to manipulate men, reading their body language and analyzing their gambling habits.

This power, coupled with a strong-willed and enterprising nature, led Doña Tules to her legendary role as a shrewd and notorious gambling queen and astute businesswoman. Her monte dealings and entertainment houses became legendary throughout the southern Rocky Mountain region. Her assistance to U.S. Army officers during the Mexican War brought her additional fame.

Doña Tules's daring behavior attracted the attention and condemnation of many puritanical Anglo travelers along the Santa Fe Trail. Demonized by later historians, Doña Tules has predominately been portrayed as little more than a caricature of an Old West madam and cardsharp, eluding serious historical study until now. Mary Cook sifts through the notoriety to illustrate the significant role Doña Tules played in New Mexico history at a time when the Spanish and Mexican eras were ending and the American era was about to begin.

Everything you wanted to know about "La Tules", and then some

A rehash of every nugget of information (gossip) of Dona Gertrudis Barceló. This lady was trashed by 99% of the Americans of the period and this book brings all of that trash into one book. My guess is that the lady was despised because of her success. If you want every bit of gossip, and this is what this book is about, this is the place for it. Sort of hard to read too. But it does bring all of the material into one place.

This is an important and inspirational work. What sets it apart from other commentaries is the emphasis on overarching themes of Passover. Rather than emphasizing the parsing of individual words and phrases, Rabbi Sacks gives you deep analysis of the meaning of Passover that will add to your understanding of and enthusiasm for this wonderous holiday.

The great ideas of the Jewish Tradition as exemplified in the 'Haggadah'

I have been reading this 'Haggadah' in preparation for Seder. I find it to be a tremendously thought-rich and inspiring one. What Rabbi Sachs has done is written a series of Essays on fundamental ideas and concepts of the Jewish tradition and shown how they are exemplifed in the 'Haggadah'.
In other words quite remarkably what the reader of this 'Haggadah' is given is the Jewish way of thinking and looking at the work. Rabbi Sachs shows how the Jewish Tradition has enriched mankind through its bequeathing ideas of Freedom and Responsibility, of Covenant and Communal Meaning and Responsibility, of Redemptive and Purposive time, of the Cooperation and Co- Creation of Divine and Human. He has an illuminating chapter on the role of Women in the 'Haggadah' a wonderful discussion of the Five who spent the Night in Learning at B'nei Brak. I found this work reminding over and over again of how rich and great the Jewish Tradition is and how meaningful and moving to be a part of the ongoing struggle of generations for the overall well- being and Redemption of the Jewish people and Mankind.
I believe each and every Seder should have this 'Haggadah' at the Table. And when we get as we often do into what , please excuse me for this, may seem to some of us , minor quibbling we should go back to this 'Haggadah' and reaffirm those great central ideas which inform it. From the Freedom of Peach from the Am Chofshi of Mitzrayim to the Freedom of Shavuot and the Luchot which are those of Cherut ( Engraved and Incised with Torah ) and positive Freedom we build meaningful Jewish experience and Life.

About the Author
Ordained in 1981, Maurine (Renee) C. Waun, D.Min. has served the United Methodist Church (Western PA Conference) and then-since 1999-several Unitarian Universalist churches in PA, OH and WV. Her degrees are: B.A. in French from Eastern Michigan University; M.A. in Linguistics from Univ. of Pittsburgh; M.Div. and D.Min. from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. Prior to ministry, she spent many years as a teacher on a variety of levels including Montessori, high school and university. She has been active in AIDS advocacy, as well as speaking and serving on behalf of disenfranchised groups through various community groups and boards of directors. In 2005 Waun became the Founding Sponsor of the African Rural School Foundation, for 400 disadvantaged children and AIDS orphans in Uganda (www.africanruralschools.org) and she takes volunteers there on a working trip every winter for two weeks. Waun is also one of the founders of the developing Quest International Charter School in Pittsburgh (www.questinternational.org). In addition to working and volunteering, she loves to travel the world and spend time with her family. Dr. Waun's book MORE Than Welcome: Learning to Embrace Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Persons in the Church continues to inspire GLBT persons, families, allies and advocates as the issue becomes more and more visible in mainstream churches.

insightful humanistic view of the duty of Church People

A scathing criticism of the people of God and their roll as such. We need to take on the attitude of Christ. However, we must learn first the Gospel and how it applies to us. Then we can go out and become messengers of that good news to all people.
Save the sermonizing. Let your yes be yes and your no be no. Spend more time with the gospel. Teach and preach and practice. Let the people learn the truth. Not everyone is equally able to accept what you have to say, but there is no reason to condemn others for the lack of understanding. Prayer is often the only way to handle these issues with those persons.
