Good Start

The book breaks down the complexity of the practice of a "minister giving counsel" into basic concepts and steps which make counseling easy to understand. It illuminates the types of questions to ask and how to ask them. It introduces basic concepts of family dynamics and explains how it is sometimes more effective to offer counseling to an entire family rather than to just one individual member. Counseling is about developing better communication skills and entertaining more choices in how people respond to the inevitable problems of life. If this is the first book you read on the subject of counseling, it offers a solid foundation to build upon.

Edward Norman is Chancellor of York Minster. Part of the Peterhouse group (with Roger Scruton, David Watkin and John Vincent), he is the most persuasive and articulate exponent of what has been termed “the new right”.He was formerly Dean of Peterhouse, Cambridge and has been a Reith lecturer.

An Anglican Catechism

The Anglican Catechism is a step in the right direction. The book tries (and with a great deal of success) to capture the essence of the Anglican Way in regards to theology. It is written in a style that flows and I was able to digest the book in just two sittings. References are made to some scripture (but it fell short of the amount needed) and some of the thirty nine articles. If you are already an Anglican the references to the thrity-nine articles were certainly easy but if you are not they just remained a marking of some strange references on the page.
Over all the catechism is worth purchasing just to see how the Anglican Church in general is evolving and trying to blend into society while at the same time trying to maintain essential Christian doctrine and order.

One way through the via media...

Once in discussion about Anglican beliefs and values, a prominent (now retired) bishop in the American church once said to me that the Episcopal church has no real dogma or doctrine one must subscribe to, but rather rests in the liturgical continuity of practice of the Book of Common Prayer. In fact this is not entirely true, on both sides of the argument; the BCP is a flexible document, often revised - particularly in America - so the continuity of the liturgy is only in the broadest terms, and the idea that there are no things Anglicans must believe stretches credulity, but only just. Trying to pin down just what it is that Anglicans believe is very tricky - put five Anglicans in a room and you'll get six opinions (at least) about most anything.
The title of this text by Edward Norton, 'An Anglican Catechism', is thus very apt. The emphasis here first should be on the first word of the title. It is not THE Anglican Catechism - it is a book of possibilities and interpretations, things which history has shown will undoubtedly change. That this is Anglican does not make it exclusive to the Church of England and its communion partners around the world - there is much to be shared here; nor does it mean that this applies to every part of the church within the official communion boundaries - within days of its publication, people around the communion were disputing different parts of the text.
Norton, a canon of York cathedral under Archbishop David Hope, the 'number two' man in the Church of England, put together this text in response to the growing question about the direction of the church, particularly with the rapid pace of change that has been taking place in the past generation, culminating with a major revision of the liturgy itself - the 2000 Common Worship, which did not contain a catechism. Another major impetus for this text was the publication by the Roman Catholic church of its primary catechism, and the careful reader will notice some similarities of overall structure in outline in the beginning.
There is a three-fold structure to the book: Part I looks at Doctrine and Order; Part II examines Morality and Applications; Part III develops a pattern for Christian Life. The text here is derivative of Norton's long experience in the church, not a rehash of a particular catechism or theology. Thus, it is both individual and communal in various aspects.
The largest section of the text is on Doctrine and Order. This does not follow a particular creedal pattern, but does draw in many of the topics addressed in the regular creeds recited in the liturgies. Norton discusses an Anglican interpretation of issues such as the Trinity, the Creation, Justification by Faith, the structure and role of clergy and laity in the church, the sacraments, the creeds, and more. There are some topics that are not developed very fully - the issue of women's ordination, for example, is still a matter of contention in the Anglican communion, and in the Church of England proper, and yet it receives only one sentence, not of explanation, but of announcement, that the Church of England ordains women to the priesthood.
In the section on Morality, Norton looks at the different kinds of morality, and how these may change over time - political morality, economic morality, environmentalism, war and peace issues, sexuality issues, family rights, human rights, and other general topics of ethical conduct. Norton also addresses in this subject topics such as secular humanism (an appropriate topic for this part) and reincarnation (a topic rather misplaced in this general section).
The final section, on developing a Christian Life, is the shortest section, but draws on the other sections to form a conclusion to the catechism. Practices important to the Christian life such as prayer, confession, self-sacrifice and discipline, looking at suffering, work, community, and authority are examined, leading up to the final statement that we all need to have faith that we live under the mercy of God.
This is a fascinating snapshot of Anglican thought. It is not a systematic series of explanations, but rather, in catechetical format, more of an exposition of beliefs; while there are interpretative statements made, this is neither a scholarly/academic text or an 'introduction'. It assumes some understanding of the beliefs and practices of the Anglican church generally.
Everyone I've known who has read this has found pieces in harmony with their beliefs, and pieces opposed to their beliefs. In good Anglican fashion, they make up their own minds. This is a good guide to help the thinking along.

THE THIRD AND FINAL VOLUME OF A VERY HELPFUL AND INFORMATIVE SET

The Editors state in the foreword to this book, "Before you, friends and readers, lies the end product of a process that began over seven years ago with the publication of The First Jewish Catalog: A Do-It-Yourself Kit (1973)... (which) attempted to make accessible to Jews with a variety of backgrounds the richness of Jewish tradition, ritual, and custom... The Second Jewish Catalog: Sources and Resources (1975) continued this approach, advancing the discussion of Jewish practices and concepts, seeking always to make them part of modern Jewish life... 'The Third Jewish Catalog,' then, subtitled 'Creating Community,' grapples with the question of ... the people Israel and its responsibility to itself and the world. Thus, there is less ritual and more 'issues,' less 'how-to' and more pointers and signposts indicating the Jewish way for ethical living."

The book is subdivided into topics of "Justice," "Community," "Routes," "Dispersion," "Exile," "Surroundings," and "Israel." Here are some quotations from the book:

"In recent years Jewish federations have drawn a variety of adverse comments... The cultural criticism has been voiced by rabbis, Jewish educators, and organized Orthodoxy... this group makes two major charges: 1. Yet Another Great Resource

After wanting the First Jewish Catalog for a year, I finally went out to buy it only to discover that there were now a second and third... So I got them all, and I'm glad I did because only the Third contains an index to everything included in all three volumes. The third catalog is worth buying if only for that! It's focus is on community building.

A terrific take on can't-sit-still cultural dynamism

Vodun is difficult to pin down long enough to describe, yet Dana Rush manages to do so without flattening the adaptive energies of these vital practices. Her work is based upon long and patient research in the Republic of Benin and Togo, and is fascinating for its insights into practices that flourish in coastal west Africa as well as throughout the Black Atlantic where they were introduced via the transatlantic slave trade. As valuable is Dr. Rush's innovative methodology that will be of distinct value to any who hope to conduct research or simply know how to approach dynamic religions anywhere in the world.

Invaluable. Challenges views that Vodun (and Africa) are unchanging artifacts.

This book is about tradition and transition within Vodun: Rush illustrates that as communities change, their ritual practice and spiritual understanding also adapts. Vodun is ancient, and many threads of tradition are also very ancient, but Rush shows that Vodou (and Africa) are not located in some unchanging, prehistoric state. Vodun is not presented as an artifact. It is dynamic, turbulent, alive. It can't be pinned down and labeled. Rush does not dissect technical aspects of Vodun, but rather delves into diverse, clearly presented stories (technically "case studies." but these are not dry field reports) that each illuminate history and living experiences of Vodou. She shows that Vodou is imbedded and enmeshed with everyday life, that it sheds light on and proposes solutions for emotional, psychological, spiritual, and cultural issues; often showing people how their problem (and the solution) is connected to greater issues, and that personal transformation and cultural transformation are intertwined. Sometimes that transformation is to delve deep into tradition, sometimes it is to find new paths. Vodou does both, and Rush takes us along to experience as much as it is possible to experience through a written text.

While West African Vodun is different in many ways from "New World" Vodou, I think this book is relevant and insightful regardless of which tradition you practice or study. I think it would be a great resource for anyone interested in Africa or any religion. The approach this book uses is also worth examining for any writers and teachers of culture and religion.

An amazing amount of research went into this book

An amazing amount of research went into this book. I wanted to understand the roots of the Haitian Vodou religion and see how African Vodun keeps going strong while drawing from other traditions today. Most of my answers were found in Ms. Rush's masterpiece. I have my own belief that "everything is vodun," a belief that many Béninois share and show by their openness and inclusion of Hindu gods in their religion.

In the spring of 2013, seventeen people gathered at the North Carolina state legislature to protest extreme legislation passed by the General Assembly attacking health insurance, unemployment insurance, labor, and voting rights. The ministers, labor, and human rights activists began praying, singing, and chanting, and were ultimately arrested. That group grew into crowds of thousands at successive "Moral Mondays" rallies, and by summer's end nearly 1,000 people had been arrested, making this sustained moral protest one of the largest acts of civil disobedience in U.S. history. The effort grew out of seven years of organizing with more than 160 groups.

Rallies continued in 2014, with a "Moral March" of 80,000 people in February. Rev. Dr. William Barber II, a pastor and president of the North Carolina Conference of the NAACP, now the largest in the South, became one of the architects of the Forward Together Moral Movement. In a new book, Forward Together, Rev. Barber tells the story of a new fusion civil rights movement, a "big tent," in which black and white, gay and straight, rich and poor, old and young, Republicans and Democrats are all welcome.

Rev. Barber's sermons/speeches at the protests, many of them collected in Forward Together, became the inspiration and rallying cry for a new civil rights movement. North Carolina today is at the epicenter of the political and spiritual crisis affecting 21st-century America. What happens here, says Barber, can shift the center of gravity in the American political discourse. Similar movements are now growing in states around the country.

About the Author

Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II is pastor of Greenleaf Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Goldsboro, NC, president of the North Carolina NAACP, and a member of the National NAACP Board. As a full-time pastor, he has given countless volunteer hours to civil rights and movement building, because of his conviction that there is no real worship without a commitment to justice and social change. He has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, CNN, MSNBC, the New York Times, and numerous other publications, and has spoken, preached and lectured around the country. His father, William J. Barber I, published The Disciples Assemblies of Eastern North Carolina in 1966 with the Christian Board of Publication, Chalice Press' parent corporation.

Barbara Zelter has decades of experience as a community organizer and policy activist in North Carolina. A professional editor and member of the North Carolina NAACP, she currently teaches in the Social Work Department of North Carolina State University.

A Stirring Call, a Cause for Hope

The Moral Mondays movement is growing in North Carolina and has inspired parallel developments in other states by uniting Americans of diverse backgrounds in a contemporary fusion movement to expose and resist injustices imposed by political extremists in high places.

"Forward Together" features a collection of energetic addresses by the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, president of the North Carolina NAACP and the movement's most prominent figure. Barber's passionate rhetoric calls us away from the "nightmare of regressive public policy and mean oppressive politics" to a just and compassionate social order. He bases his case on the North Carolina and United States constitutions, state and national history, and inclusive appeals to religious and moral beliefs. In the great tradition of non-violent action, he seeks to win over his opponents rather than simply defeat them. "We have to look at public policy through the moral lens of justice for all and the constitutional principle of the common good," Barber says.

The Forward Together Moral Movement advocates a breathtaking array of societal goods, all of them under siege by extremists in the North Carolina statehouse and elsewhere:

* Secure pro-labor, anti-poverty policies that ensure economic sustainability.

* Provide well-founded, quality public education for all.

* Promote healthcare for all, including affordable access, the expansion of Medicaid, protection for women's health, and the assurance of environmental justice in every community.

* Address the continuing inequalities in the criminal justice system and ensure equality under the law for every person, regardless of race, class, creed, documentation, or sexual orientation.

* Protect and expand voting rights, women's rights, LGBT rights, immigrants' rights, and the principle of equal protection under the law.

Great Read

I saw Rev. William Barber II on television the he addressed The Democratic Convention in Philadelphia. I enjoyed his address and wanted to know more about him. Rev. Barber's book was compelling, authentic and profound. I lived through the sixties and remember vividly 1965 Voting Rights Act, Martin Luther King, Jr. and fight for Civil Rights. Rev. Barber is the younger generations Martin Luther King, Jr. He is a wonderful man....thank God for him and his work!

The elixir of movement

This inspiring collection feeds the soul. It is the elixir of the fight for our humanity. And in those dark days of despair that inflict any movement, large or small Reverend Barber's words and the movement that was built reminds us to keep going, to persevere and to celebrate the struggle . As he says forward together. He gives us America at its best and democracy as it should be. The bringing together in the south of working class and poor whites, African Americans, Latinos, gay, straight, young and old for a sustained fight for justice and democracy is the anthem that drives social change. Reverend Barber is the civil rights leader of our day and Moral Mondays a candle in the darkness - in fact tens of thousands of candles - and a baton that we must all grab and keep running until we win.

Travis Collins serves multiple congregations in two primary roles. As the Director of Mission Advancement and Virginia Regional Coordinator for Fresh Expressions US, he encourages and equips congregations to begin new forms of church primarily for those who are not yet members of any church. As a consultant with the The Center for Healthy Churches, he helps congregations and ministers in key moments such as visioning, conflict and transition. His church consultant role also includes membership in The Columbia Partnership Network, and one of his major passions is helping vocational ministers deal in a healthy way with the challenges inherent in their calling.
