Mama Fela's Girls: A Novel, by Ana Baca

Mama Fela, a skilled seamstress, is the aging matriarch of the Romero clan in Santa Lucía, a small town in northeastern New Mexico at the height of the Great Depression. Her six-year-old granddaughter and constant companion, Cipriana, delights in the Shirley Temple movies that occasionally come to the town's theater. Through Cipriana's eyes, we see her parents' struggles over money. Graciela, Cipriana's mother, is a teacher in a rural school system who juggles the roles of wife, mother, and breadwinner. Cita, Cipriana's aunt who is in her mid-twenties, spends her days mothering neighbors, nieces, and a nephew, while dreaming of creative pursuits in a time and place where women's roles are strictly defined and dreams are stifled. Together, these strong women cope with the challenges of poverty and prejudice, striving to pull their families through these difficult times.

"Literature at its best introduces humankind to itself. Meet Mama Fela--wife, mother, grandmother, caught in a crossfire of time and geography, a prism through which pass the many colors of Hispanic life in America. Ana Baca's compelling tale will draw you in until you, too, join the family."--Jerry Spinelli, Newbery Medal-winning author of Maniac Magee

"Delightful read. Details, from muddy roads and crank-start cars to schoolhouses heated by wood fires and cold, spider-infested outhouses, all lend historical accuracy."--Lisa Lenard-Cook, author of Dissonance and Coyote Morning

Fictional History at its Best
By M. R. Gonzales
The author's flowing and engaging writing lends a unique historical perspective to the socio-cultural factors of one segment of our society. The setting is that of the Great Depression era, a time in history that continues to exert its influence. The book brings to life, with admirable attention to historical detail, the characters' adaptive responses (both positive and negative) to trying circumstances. The parallels between that point in time and the challenges facing us today make this work especially relevant. I recommend this book to both history buffs and students of the dynamics between historical events and socio-cultural unfolding.

Mama Fela's Girls
By Jean S Reed
This is a superb book that covers issues of daily living and struggles of the Hispanic Educator in the 30's and 40's in New Mexico. It is a book that all adults and youth should read if they truly want to understand the culture of the Extended Hispanic Family. I laughed and cried throughout the entire reading of this book. It truly touches the experience of many Hispanic Male and Female alike in their efforts toward racial equality in life and education.A superb job by Ana Baca the author. Let's have a sequal!

Mama Fela's Girls
By Cindy Bellinger
The book opens with Mama Fela ambling up a dirt road and seeing "On every porch, geraniums spilled from coffee cans...and Mama Fele knew the preferred brand of morning brew in every household." Details abound in the novel set in San Lucia, a small town in northeastern New Mexico during the Depression. Mama Fela's Girls portrays three generations of strong women striving to pull themselves and their families through difficult times. Mama Fela, a skilled seamstress and passionate herbalist, is the aging matriarch of the Romero clan. Her six-year-old granddaughter and constant companion is Cipriana, whose mother Graciela is a rural school teacher. Cipriana's young aunt, Cita, dreams of life beyond caring for family and friends.

Told through the alternating voices of these four women, the novel (a bit over-written and wordy in spots) celebrates the cultures of a small New Mexican town, exploring the timeless issues of family ties, loss and finding identity that defies the stereotypes of ethnicity, class and gender. The main characters cope with the challenges of poverty and prejudice as they pull their families through difficult times. It's a good book for a peek into the traditional cultures of New Mexico.
