About the Author
José Skinner is the author of Flight and Other Stories, a graduate of the Iowa Writers Workshop, and the former director of the MFA program in creative writing at the University of Texas Pan American. He lives in Austin, Texas.

Highly recommended! The stories in The Tombstone Race traverse the ...

Highly recommended! The stories in The Tombstone Race traverse the collision of old world traditions with 21st century ethics, resulting in a delightful playfulness as the old generation puzzles over the new, and Mexican culture clashes with New Mexican. Each story plunges into deep emotional territory as parents struggle with their kids, adolescents struggle with each other, and addicts struggle with their addictions; and yet as Skinner tells it there is a light and even wry aspect of each adventure. Sexual encounters have a raw naivete, presented mostly as first-time and even surprising phenomena. Skinner somehow has the ability to grapple with the gravitas of such personal trevails while still eliciting full belly laughs from his readers - a rare gift indeed! Each tale leads the protagonist on a journey towards his or her identity - with varying degrees of 'success' - leaving the reader with a deep sense of resonance and connection to the main character. The Tombstone Race is perfect for anyone who's every wondered who they are, and not been afraid to laugh at themselves a bit during the process of finding out.

Authentic, Immersive, Urgent

Best short story collection I've read in a long time. I wanted to keep reading. Not because the author depends on cheap cliffhangers or melodrama, but because his language is so engaging, and because the characters and their problems seem to matter so much. I frequently forgot I was reading and instead was immersed in Skinner's reality, one of flawed people being surprised by their own evolutions in a world that can be brutal and tender at once. The book feels authentic and easy, as though a friend is telling me a story over a beer, a story that changed him, and which might in turn change me. A real achievement.

Tombstone is an excellent collection of short stories. Each one kept me wondering what would happen next and I didn't want to stop reading until I found out! I was sad when I finished the book, because I wanted more! So enjoyed these stories!
