Born in Minnesota and raised in Chicago, Jenny Vincent was educated at a progressive private school and Vassar College. Introduced to international folk music at an early age, she remains a performer and champion of this "music of the people."
In 1936, Jenny and her first husband visited northern New Mexico at the invitation of D. H. Lawrence's widow. Enchanted with the place and its people, they purchased a ranch that has been Jenny's home ever since.
Jenny believed strongly in social advocacy, which she expressed through song. She performed with such luminaries as Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Malvina Reynolds, and Earl Robinson, all social activists who used music as a voice for world peace, civil liberties, and human rights.
Jenny and her second husband supported such causes as the Salt of the Earth strike, Native American rights, and the rising Chicano movement. Through it all Jenny raised a family and continued her music. In her nineties, Jenny continues performing, and in 2006 was honored by the University of New Mexico and the New Mexico State Historic Preservation Division for her many decades as a prominent cultural activist.

About the Author
Craig Smith has a master's in American studies from New York University. He has published poetry and prose in numerous literary magazines and lives near Taos, New Mexico.

An engaging biography

This excellent biography portrays the life of a courageous woman, still alive, who moved from a privileged background in America and Europe to a far more challenging environment in the desert Southwest. Using interviews with Jenny Vincent (and other fresh material), Craig Smith brings vividly to life her long journey from Vassar College, marriage to Harry K. Wells, and a year-long bicycle tour of Europe, to her arrival in New Mexico. There, freshly centered, she undertook to live the simple life and to evolve, over the years, into a confident, jubilant proponent of folk music, education, and activism. Even today, the Jenny Vincent Trio still performs, with Jenny's accordian a distinctive and soulful sound. I highly recommend this rich, carefully researched biography. - Michael Squires

Excellent, Better Beyond Expectations

I grew up listening to a cassette of her children's songs, which has since been lost or broken. While looking for a replacement "Spanish American Children's Songs," I found this book---what an interesting life this woman has led! What a positive and lasting impact she had made! I would never have guessed that she and I had anything in common other than being in Northern New Mexico, (she was from a small Minnesota town where I went to college, which I did not know at the time.) This book has many details of her performances and publications; the use of her FBI file as a source for the book is amusing, and scary. Being harassed by government entities for being outspoken and supporting such positive community based values seems completely ludicrous in view of all her accomplishments.
It was an enjoyable read, I'm glad to have read it, and pleased beyond measure to have grown up listening to music made by such a great lady.

What an amazing book! Detailed and a total page turner. Such a great reminder of how music can bridge cultures, enliven hearts and provide a thread through hardship.
