NEXT in the Unbinding the Gospel Series. With 40 day personal prayer journal. For small groups ready to invite... Unbinding Your Soul is the "unbinding" model for actual, invitational evangelism. Typical mainline churches get ready for the Unbinding Your Soul small group study with Unbinding the Gospel/Unbinding Your Heart "pre-evangelism." SOUL helps them invite unchurched friends or recent visitors to try an "experiment" (some churches call it a "test drive") of Christian faith and community. Many people who aren't connected with a church would love to try a no-obligation "experiment" of substantial spiritual discussion, prayer, and community. Unbinding Your Soul prepares church members to invite their friends into a four-week small group experience with short study chapters, an individual prayer journal, prayer partner activities, and group exercises. Unbinding Your Soul works for: Growing, healthy churches, Churches that have done an all-church saturation study with the Unbinding the Gospel Series, New church starts, New members' classes, and "On fire" groups in typical churches. Note: Two copies will be needed per small group participant. Participants pray for the person to receive the extra book. Groups double. The Unbinding the Gospel Series is in over 12,000 congregations across the theological spectrum. The Christian Century, Alban Institute Congregations, Evangelism Connections, 8 heads of denominations, Brian McLaren, George Hunter & Richard Peace have endorsed it enthusiastically. The Series arises out of the only major national study of evangelism in mainline churches, funded by the Lilly Endowment. From the Unbinding the Gospel Series.

Keep Unbinding Alive and Fresh
By Amazon Customer
This text is really number four in a series (although it can read alone), all beginning with Unbinding the Gospel. Like the others in the series, it is VERY well written in terms that do not require a seminary education or a Bible dictionary! The text has a natural flow, is engaging and rather quick read. That being said, do not be deceived by the simplicity of the reading, for this text has real punch behind under its cover.
First of all, the book is a perfect answer for congregations who have read Unbinding the Gospel or Unbinding the Heart. What I have heard most often, in the midst of the excitement of the moment, was (and is), what's next? Once people connect to God and one another in a small group, it is like unleashing a sleeping lion...there is power, energy and an insatiable appetite. This text helps feed the hunger of those that need more.
Secondly, this text has two wonderful elements. One for church groups (those that have a relationship with a believing community) AND one that is geared for church members and their friends (particularly directed at folks who are largely unchurched). Hence, there is a tool to help both the believer and the seeker grow in their relationship with God.
Like the other books in the series, Unbinding the Soul avoids that nasty word, "evangelism" (you know, the word that makes postmoderns run faster than free coffee on opening day at Starbucks). Rather, "Unbinding" unleashes a power that will evangelize in numbers and ways that has not been seen in decades, all from within, all from a connection with the Lord.
Have you read the other books in the series? Great, read Unbinding the Soul and keep the fire burning. Making this your first trip to the Unbinding buffet? Hang on, you'll be hooked in 5 pages and be hungry for more. The only question, what is Martha Grace Reese going to write next?

The Next Step in Unbinding the Gospel
By Robert Cornwall
Mainline Protestants, it appears, have a very strong aversion to the word evangelism, but Martha Grace Reese is determined to change this. With this book her "Unbinding the Gospel" Series reaches four books, and once again she invites a a fearful and trembling Christian community to share their faith, both with those inside and those outside the church.
"Unbinding Your Soul" (Chalice, 2009) is designed for use by churches that have used the earlier books, and it's designed to change the attitudes of those who have reacted to the hard-sell evangelism that many have observed and experienced. She writes of our predicament:
"Hideous cartoons of evangelism lurk in our heads. I've led the only major, national study of evangelism in seven specific denominations called "Mainline Churches." I can tell you for a fact, after four years of intensive research, that people who don't go to church cringe at the idea of strangers harassing them with humiliating, condescending questions about whether they're saved. But that's nothing compared to the horor with which members of churches hear the word "evangelism." The word hits the eardrum. Christians break out in a cold sweat and start lacing on their Adidas.(tm)" (p. xi)
With this concern in mind, she encourages church folk to continue sharing their faith and engaging in a life of prayer -- with the expectation that transformation will take place in the church. This may not happen immediately, but if we're consistent and persistent, and stay with this great things can happen. This book is comprised of two four-week sets of "studies." One set is designed for church people, and the other is for what she calls "experiment" groups. The hope is that after working through the church-focused studies, the groups will want to invite others into the conversation. The twist to the book is its lay out. The series set for church people is found in Part Two (chapters 5-8), and the set designed for the experiment groups is found in Part One (chapters 1-4). You may, as the reader, begin to wonder why the book is laid out the way it is. After all, the set found in chapters 5-8 will likely be covered first. There is a rationale. Reese believes that it's rude to invite people to a study that is "half-way over." The Introduction will make all of this clear.
The book is written in Reese's lively style. It continually emphasizes the need for prayer and for consistency. The group studies have different focuses. The church study is focused on developing "faith and courage." The experiment set is designed to get people talking about faith at a fairly basic level and to gain confidence in praying together and in private.
It offers a reminder that transformation takes time and commitment, and that this book is simply one more step along the way. What is different here is that the book is designed for inviting others into a conversation about faith and about prayer. There are four chapters, each with questions for reflection and exercises for use in the group sessions. There is also a prayer journal attached to each set of sessions - actually these are set within the sets, and are designed to be part of the experience.
Part three includes information on how to use the prayer journal, a facilitator's guide, and a pastor's guide. The expectation here is that a number of groups will form, each led by two facilitators, who are guided by the pastor. Pastors are, as with the earlier books, encouraged to be in prayer for facilitators, and at least for the four weeks of the church study, preach alongside it.
Although a congregation can use both sets for congregational use, it is clear that intention is that the first set is best used as a way of inviting others into the conversation. Reese also allows for a congregation to begin with Unbinding Your Soul, but having been through the "Unbinding Your Heart" book with a congregation, my sense is that such an approach would short-circuit the effort. Leaders of churches should read Unbinding the Gospel, and congregations should go through "Unbinding Your Heart." Then follow that up with "Unbinding Your Soul." If you do, I do believe you will see good things happen in your church. But, remember, this isn't a quick fix. It won't solve all your problems. Don't skip aspects of the process.
This is an excellent continuation of an important project that is pushing mainline churches into the business of faith sharing and prayer.

Soul Food Indeed
By Bruce Laverman
Soul Food Indeed!
So here you are, a pastor in a church content with things as they are, or a brand new church, or a good church that could be a great church, and you want to get people off first base and moving toward what's next. Where do you start? What do you do? How do you do it? And what do you use to get there? If it were I (retired after four decades of parish ministry in four congregations in four states and a dozen years as my denomination's minister of evangelism) I'd start with this book, and my key leaders. Martha Grace Reese provides all kinds of helps on how and what to do, and all the materials you'll need to begin to move your faith community from here to there gradually, spiritually, and throughly.
Now this isn't just theory we're talking about, but know-how that comes out of the author's experience with a Lilly sponsored study of seven mainline denominations, and follow-up in 12,000 congregations in 50 states from 49 denominations in eight countries. In this the fourth book in the series we have the application of proven ways of genuinely spiritually energizing churches and the people, including the pastor. The author partiently takes us step-by-step through a proven process of personal spiritual growth, combined with small group sharing that not only has the potential for energizing a church, but actually has the track record of three years running in churches like yours, to prove and improve on tested ideas.
Read this book, pray, share it with the leaders of your church and they'll have to tie you down in your chair to keep you from leading them through one of the greatest experiences in their church's life, as well as their own spiritual journey. Guaranteed! Still skeptical? Find more helps and resources by going to [...] and see for yourself.
