News of María of Ágreda's exceptional attributes spread from her cloistered convent in seventeenth-century Ágreda (Spain) to the court in Madrid and beyond. Without leaving her village, the abbess impacted the kingdom, her church, and the New World; Spanish Hapsburg king Felipe IV sought her spiritual and political counsel for over twenty-two years. Based upon her transcendent visionary experiences, Sor María chronicled the life of Mary, mother of Jesus of Nazareth, in Mystical City of God, a work the Spanish Inquisition temporarily condemned. In America, reports emerged that she had miraculously appeared to Jumano Native Americans--a feat corroborated by witnesses in Spain, Texas, and New Mexico, where she is honored today as the legendary "Lady in Blue." Lauded in Spain as one of the most influential women in its history, and in the United States as an inspiring pioneer, Sor María's story will appeal to cultural historians and to women who have struggled for equanimity against all odds.
Marilyn Fedewa's biography of this fascinating woman integrates voluminous autobiographical, historical, and literary sources published by and about María of Ágreda. With liberal access to Sor María's papal delegate in Spain and convent archives in Ágreda, Fedewa skillfully reconstructs a historical and spiritual backdrop against which Sor María's voice may be heard.

Wonderfully Fascinating Historical Material
By Ronald E. Herring
After having the good fortune of attending the 1st "Lady in Blue" celebration at Paint Rock, Texas in 2009; and reading local newspaper articles of the story; I had to learn more of Maria of Agreda. I purchased this wonderful book and found it difficult to put it down. The book is thoroughly researched and so well written that any reader interested in the period of the Spanish Inquisition (and a Catholic Nun who survived it); her relationship as an adviser to her King as a cloistered nun; and most amazingly the fact that she "bilocated" to share Christianity with Native Americans will keep the reader intrigued until the end. This book should be on your "must read" list.
Enjoy it!

Brilliantly written and thoroughly researched
By Trudie Barreras
Since I began reviewing books for Amazon Vine several years ago, I’ll admit that my other reading has been more than a little curtailed. Although I have read a number of books not included in my Vine offerings, unless they are very recently published, or I’ve been asked to review by an author or publisher (and therefore find that there are few other evaluations on the Amazon site) I read for my own pleasure or information and don’t share an opinion.
I discovered Marilyn H. Fedewa’s “María of Ágreda: Mystical Lady in Blue” (published in 2009 by the University of New Mexico Press) at a unique location – the gift shop of the Abó ruins, part of the Salinas Missions National Monument in eastern central New Mexico. It seems that the Park Ranger at that location is one of the – apparently many – people in the US who are quite concerned to promote the Cause of this 17th century Spanish nun for sainthood. Before I’d even purchased the book, this person had explained that the “Mystical Lady in Blue” was greatly revered amongst the Hispanic people of that region. When I got home and checked on Amazon, I found that as of that date, only 15 other reviews of the book – uniformly extremely positive – had been published on this site, so I have decided to share my own.
Fedewa’s book is a brilliantly written and thoroughly researched historical biography of a fascinating spiritual phenomenon and the amazing woman involved. It seems that María Coronel, born in 1602 in the town of Ágreda, Spain, was from a very devout Catholic family which also apparently had Jewish roots. María herself from earliest childhood showed an affinity towards extreme piety, with a mystical nature and the ability to express herself in extraordinary writing. She experienced a longing to become a missionary to the New World; Spanish colonization was at that time expanding into what is now Texas and New Mexico, and missionary work was occurring amongst the Pueblo people in the Rio Grande River Valley as well as the more nomadic Indian tribes inhabiting the plains to the east.
When María was 15, the piety of her family led to the dissolution of the family home, which was turned into a convent, while her male relatives joined the Franciscan religious order. The order which María’s mother Catalina wished to found in their former home was an offshoot group of the Poor Clares (Franciscans), named “Conceptionist” due to a special devotion to Mary in the manifestation of the Immaculate Conception. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conceptionists). María professed to this convent, and when she was 18, began to experience some extreme manifestations of mystical experience, including levitation and bilocation. In the years from 1620-23, a “Lady in Blue” (the Conceptionist habit included a blue cloak) appeared to the Jumano Indians in West Texas, and evangelized them. During none of this time did Sor María actually leave her monastery, but in 1629, after the Indians finally made contact with Franciscan missionaries at Isleta Pueblo in New Mexico, it was established that the woman who had urged them to seek baptism was identifiable as Sor María of Ágreda.
These experiences – called “exterioridades” – were considered disruptive to the community of nuns, and potentially dangerous to Sor María’s soul due to their sensationalism, so she followed her Confessor’s instruction to pray for their cessation. The amazing postscript is that the Jumano Indians had been so impressed by the teachings of the Lady in Blue that they faithfully made the long trek from their home grounds near San Angelo, TX, to Isleta, NM every year for six years, each time asking for (and being refused) Baptism by the missionary priest there.
Although there was some dispute about whether or not the bilocation apparitions were genuine, however, the real reason that Sor María, while declared “Venerable” shortly after her death, has so far been denied Canonization despite an exemplary life (and even though her corpse has remained incorrupt for over 300 years), has to do with her advocacy for belief in the Immaculate Conception. This, seemingly, was a very hot topic in the 17th – 19th centuries, and until it was promulgated as doctrine by Pope Pius IX in 1854, it seemed that every time María’s Cause seemed to be making progress, the theological debate would shift. At times her greatly acclaimed devotional “biography” of the Blessed Virgin Mary, titled “Mystical City of God”, was actually placed on the Index of forbidden books.
Fedewa’s exceptional narrative covers much more than the “miraculous” aspects of María of Ágreda’s extraordinary life, and does so in amazingly contemporary terms. A final concluding note, her “Afterword” titled “The Quest to Explain Mystical Phenomena in a Scientific Age”, is a brilliant essay all by itself. Whatever one’s opinion on the excesses of penitential piety or the oppressiveness of the Inquisition at that time of Catholic history, even despite theological perspectives on doctrine, this book is a deeply moving and valuable insight into the life of an extraordinary mystic, as well as a person of great historical importance.

Well Researched, Important Info for Our Times
By Sarla V. Joy
Marilyn Fedewa has done a beautiful job of researching this incredible, but absolutely true story of Maria of Agreda. There are over 500 historical accounts of this cloistered nun having visited the Jumano Indians in the Southwestern US. Many footnbotes are provided and a thorough bibliography is included. In addition to being well researched, the text is also very readable. Thank you for such a wonderful book.
