The scrolls of Nag Hammadi are discussed, and Mary's role as visionary and leader are looked at--all giving a portrait of Mary's prominence in the early centuries of Christianity. Mary's story is part of an overall egalitarian and mystical movement that interpreted the absence of Jesus' body as a powerful and prophetic sign of God's vindication of the world's suffering. The conclusion takes us back to the contemporary world. A reconstruction of Mary Magdalene and a Magdlene Christianity might be a source for social transformation. An epilogue, completely new to this book, looks at the phenomenon of THE DA VINCI CODE.

About the Author
Jane Schaberg is Professor of Religious Studies and Women's Studies at the University of Detroit Mercy. She is the author of The Illegitimacy of Jesus, and an editor of On the Cutting Edge: The Study of Women in the Biblical World. As an acknowledged expert on Mary Magdalene, she has appeared in the Washington Times, on CNN and in Newsweek.
Jane Schaberg is also a contributor to Secrets of Mary Magdalene Edited by Dan Burstein and Arne J. de Keijzer, with an introduction by Elaine H. Pagels.
MElanie Johnson-DeBaufre is Associate Professor of New Testament at Drew Theological School, Madison, NY, USA

I knew Mary Magdalene was not a harlot, but there is so much I didn't know..

Just started this book. Usually read a couple books at the same time; not now. This is a fascinating book by a renowned biblical scholar written from a woman's point of view. Not ten minutes into the intro the author pointed out that Mary Madalene (& other women) stayed with Jesus the whole time, even when he was put into the borrowed tomb. The other apostles fled. Jane Schaberg had me there, I had never thought of that before, despite years & years of religious education. I have been a feminist for 40 years.s it is embarrassing to admit that level of ignorance.
When I finish reading I will return with a real review of this book, however, I just could not wait to tell how great it is.

An interesting look at the woman at the tomb

Is it possible to understand the Mary Magdalene of the gospels? The authors of this book seek to peel away the tradition and confusion over this woman, sometimes a combination of five different women mentioned in the gospels, and to look at her through a feminist reading of the texts. Mary's position in church history, literature and even modern films is discussed along with her importance as a figure for Christian woman - Mary is both an example of equality in church and society and a representation of women throughout history "who have been distorted, ignored, appropriated and denied authority." They discuss the obsession with Mary's sexuality and images of her as a madwoman against the importance of her as a witness to the resurrection and, for some scholars, a successor to Jesus hinted at in John 20. The book is easy to read, written with lots of author's comments and without requiring knowledge of biblical scholarship. Its strongly feminist tone might be off-putting to some but it is a useful summary of the situation of Mary Magdalene in the church through the ages.
