This is a rich history of the lore and ceremonies of NM cultures over the ages. It is well researched and well written. As a former SW Cultural History teacher I am most impressed with this anthology.

J. Michael Adams is the Dean of the College of Design Arts at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Penny Ann Dolin has more than 25 years of experience in the graphic communications industry, specializing in digital imaging, prepress technologies, and commercial photography. She gained valuable prepress industry experience as a corporate member of American Color Premedia, and her accomplishments include the founding and successful operation of a full-service commercial photography studio. Ms. Dolin is a faculty member at Arizona State University, in Graphic Information Technology (Department of Management Technology) within the College of Technology and Applied Science.

Poor example of typesetting

The content of this book is well written and comprehensive, but for a book about printing technology it is an awful example of typesetting. Gappy typesetting is found throughout. I wasn't expecting the book to necessarily address typesetting, but I was expecting it to be a good example. It's not. Before you buy the book, be sure you understand that it is focused on PRINTING, not typography or typesetting. I found the explanation of paper weights to be especially enlightening.

Caution graphic designers...

I ordered this book because as an emerging graphic desginer, I wanted to know how to set my documents up for print in programs like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and of course Quark. Although this book is very detailed about the history of printing and how printing works, as well as job estimates for printing, it seems really outdated as far as using your computer for prepress and helping a designer work with a local printer. And the clencher is, it is basically a school textbook. That is what it looks and reads like, unfortunately. However, if you are an artist in any way and are studying art and printing processes and all the different kinds, you might find it somewhat helpful. For those of you creating a brochure in Quark and need information on color processing, stacking, and how to approach your printer to get the job done? This is not the book. Try "Pocketguide to Digital Printing".

A Good Book Indeed

What really trilled me about this book is its dynamic nature. The authors of the book have consistently updated this book in line with technological advances in printing. I was impressed when I saw recent digital presses like Indigo and Xeikon. This book covers all aspects of printing, it give a sound historical perspective of each aspect. It is a good reference book for all printers, amateur or professional, it has good things in stock for all classes of printers.

This is an excellent introduction to the philosophy of the Chabad movement. It is a wonderful overview of the main ideas of the Chassidic movement since its creation by the Baal Shem Tov. It also has a detailed list of the literature that supports the quotes that appear in the text.

New Mexico's master storyteller creates a southwestern version of the Arabian Nights in this fable set in seventeenth-century Santa Fe. In January 1680 a dozen Pueblo Indians are charged with conspiring to incite a revolution against the colonial government. When the prisoners are brought before the Governor, one of them is revealed as a young woman. Educated by the friars in her pueblo's mission church, Serafina speaks beautiful Spanish and surprises the Governor with her fearlessness and intelligence.

The two strike a bargain. She will entertain the Governor by telling him a story. If he likes her story, he will free one of the prisoners. Like Scheherezade, who prevented her royal husband from killing her by telling him stories, Serafina keeps the Governor so entertained with her versions of Nuevo Mexicano cuentos that he spares the lives of all her fellow prisoners.

Some of the stories Serafina tells will have a familiar ring to them, for they came from Europe and were New Mexicanized by the Spanish colonists. Some have Pueblo Indian plots and characters--and it is this blending of the two cultures that is Anaya's true subject.

Adult/High School–In 1680, 15-year-old Serafina is captured along with 11 other Pueblo Indians who are accused of plotting against the Spaniards governing New Mexico. She speaks fluent Spanish and is also a storyteller, and a bargain is struck with the governor: in return for telling the lonely widower a story, one of the prisoners will be released. Each evening Serafina delights him with a tale; next morning he questions and releases a prisoner. Most stories are familiar to him, like "Cinderella" retold as "Miranda's Gift." Others are Indian. But the governor's enemies are aghast at his friendship with Serafina, believing that the natives should be punished harshly, not freed. At last it is Serafina's turn to be tried. If the governor releases her, an agent of the Inquisition will take her away to be tried for heresy, so he decrees that she must remain in his custody for the present, her "prison" a room behind his kitchen. The Governor of Spanish New Mexico is a troubled, lonely man, caught between his Spanish subjects, the increasingly restless Pueblo peoples, the Apache marauders, and a fanatical Catholic church that is becoming ever more repressive. One day in 1680 twelve Indian prisoners are brought into town, accused of plotting against the Spanish government. Turns out, one of the "plotters" is a beautiful young woman and gifted storyteller, Serafina.

The Governor strikes an odd bargain with this Serafina. For every night that she entertains him with a story he will free one of the prisoners. Sounds like the Thousand And One Nights, but with some unusual twists. Not only are the lives of the prisoners at stake, and that of Serafina, but the future of the territory. Can the Spanish colonials and the native peoples cross their cultural divide and live in peace? Can the stories of the gifted Serafina bring them together? Or is it already too late?

Well, you simply have to read this book. Author Rudolfo Anaya writes in a beautiful, heartfelt style, sprinkling his clear, simple English with Spanish words and phrases, to create a vivid impression of the old Southwest. Loosely based on actual historical events, the story is as meaningful as ever in a time when peoples and cultures are struggling to coexist. The stories are so well done that they become more than stories. They speak to the reader personally. This book is easily read but will move you deeply. I recommend it most highly. I loved the stories- they crossed the cultural divide with adaptations of stories most of us heard as children.

Unsatisfactory condition of book. Came only in a plastic bag w/ no padding. Corners of the hardback were crushed.
