Way better than "Mayordomo"

Unlike Stanley Crawford's almost cripplingly boring book "Mayordomo," "The River in Winter" is a collection of essays, and is actually interesting to read.

I particularly like his essay on the Sandia Mountains village of San Antonio, the village's shotgun-wielding struggle to stop rampant development, and the village's acequia or irrigation ditch.

So did some UNM students several years ago, because they blatantly plagiarized several passages from that essay for a paper they published entitled "Agua, Tierra, y Vida."

Fans of New Mexico, small town life, and a simpler way of living will find a lot here to enjoy.

Expectations

The River captured me because of it's promise of what happens in small Northern New Mexico towns. How so much depends on water and the acequias. The book sometimes drags along, but so does life. It helped refresh my memory of this high country and it's resilient people! The promise was met!

Well-rendered character driven story

Set in the mid-1940s, the story centers around the Brown family and is rendered in the form John's visits to his psychologist, an interesting literary device given that therapy was not widely utilized by the general populace. Initially John visits the doctor in an attempt to save his nephews from what John thinks of as "the wasteland." The wasteland is the perpetuation of the Brown family's various dysfunctions: denial of their Jewish heritage, inability to display emotion and communication with family members, a sense of guilt and over-attachment to one's parents, and a failure to accept and love one's self.

Slowly John realizes he cannot save his nephew until he understands the motivations of his family members and comes to accept both himself and his family.

The complexities of family and personality are well developed. The secondary characters are mulit-dimensional, although always seen through John's eyes. There is some repetitiveness and at times the story seems overly long, but it seems reasonable because the literary device concerns talking to a therapist. There is not a traditional plot, rather the story moves along as John discovers things about himself and his family.

_Wasteland_ appears on the Publisher Triangles Top 100 Gay/Lesbian Books and contains clear, although limited lesbian content. John's sister Debbie is a tomboy who as an adult prefers to dress in pants; she is also unmarried, has short hair, and only has female friends. John senses there is something "queer" about Debbie, but also sees her as the best member of the family. Debbie encourages John to seek therapy because she has done likewise, and this act of encouragement ultimately rescues John and, in a larger sense, the entire family. Debbie's homosexuality is clearly named by the psychologist, but is not a primary focus of the story. Several things make _Wasteland_ unique from a gay/lesbian perspective: 1) Debbie does not seek therapy to be "cured" of her homosexuality, which was a common literary theme of the time, but to learn to accept herself; 2) Debbie is the first fully developed Jewish lesbian character to appear in contemporary American literature; 3) Debbie, by recommending therapy, becomes the catalyst for family redemption, a heroine at a time when gay/lesbian literary characters were demonized.

An interesting family tale of a new beginning

This book begins with the assimilation of the children of Jewish immigrants into the America of the 1930s and 1940s--each in their own individual way. Slowly, each main character is developed through the eyes of the youngest son who is seeing a therapist to face his own demons. The device of using the written notes of the therapist works sometimes, but seems a bit contrived at others. Over time, the family members reassess their relationships, and many are begun anew without the baggage of the past. Overall, quite a well-written and interesting story, and definitely worth a read.

When Jerry Elmer turned eighteen at the height of the Vietnam War, he publicly refused to register for the draft, a felony then and now. Later he burglarized the offices of fourteen draft boards in three cities, destroying the files of men eligible to be drafted. After working almost twenty years in the peace movement, he attended law school, where he was the only convicted felon in Harvard's class of 1990.

This book is a blend of personal memoir, contemporary history, and astute political analysis. Elmer draws on a variety of sources, including never-before-released FBI files, and argues passionately for the practice of nonviolence. He describes the range of actions he took—from draft card burning to organizing draft board raids with Father Phil Berrigan; from vigils on the Capitol steps inside "tiger cages" used to torture Vietnamese political prisoners to jail time for protesting nuclear power plants; from a tour of the killing fields of Cambodia to meetings with Corazon Aquino in the Philippines.

A crucial work

Memoirs are a mixed-bag. Some, like Bill Ayer's Fugitive Days are filled with pages of anecdotes and passion. They're endlessly interesting and entertaining, but may leave the reader feeling more like they've just read a novel rather than a memoir (read: history). They may even leave the reader with more questions than answers--not necessarily a bad thing. With Felon for Peace, Jerry Elmer has offered an analytical work that manages to be highly personal, entertaining, and informative. It leaves the reader with a perhaps more useful set of questions.

Elmer is a fearless writer: He takes on antiwar movement/scholar heavyweights like DeBenedetti and is not afraid to criticize his fellow activists. And he does not hesitant to criticize himself or admit when his own thinking was flawed.

Felon for Peace is an important work, as historians interested in the Vietnam War era well know--activists from the period need to offer up their versions of their history. They would do well to use Elmer's work as model (or inspiration). And despite that it lacks foot- or endnotes, any class on American history, peace studies, or activism would be better for using this excellent text.

Power of Direct Action

This is a wonderful exposition of the power of direct action to effect social change. Mr. Elmer does a great job of showing how a typical, suburban, middle class kid can end up burning draft records and sitting in a tiger cage for the summer on the capital steps. He makes a convncing case for the efficacy of direct action for those closed out of the political process. In effect, while very few decision makers will directly change their position because of sit-ins, protests, hunger strikes,etc., they have the power to change public opinion. As he explains, 10,000 young people may not have had the votes to elect anyone, and certainly didn't have the money to play politics in the usual way of making campaigndonations, etc., what they did have was the power to show that the only way to fight the Vietnam war was to send tens of thousands of middle class kids to jail--something thqt this country ultimately was not willing to do (at least, given the reality on the ground created by the Vietnamese themselves, and the international climate).

Where Elmer over sells his case is in arguing that non-violence is always an appropriate (and seems to argue that it is always the best tactic). It is hard to believe that this would ever work in a society such as Somalia, iraq, Cambodia (under the Khmer rouge), etc. It is one thing to ask masses of people to risk a short (or even long) jail sentenceas the price of civil disobedience, It is quite another when the price is immediate death, and the torture/murder of one's entire family. In other words, civil disobedience assumes a certain level of commitment to law and openness which simply is not present in all societies at all times.

One final criticism--Elmer confuseses non-violence as a tactic for mass mobilization with pacificism as a way of life. While the civil rights movement certainly won great victories using nonviolent protest as a mass protest strategy, it is unclear that those demonstrations would have been possible but for a committed core of people who were commited to self-defense--including resort to violence. The civil rights workers we all know about--certainly including Dr. Martin luther King, Jr., himself, were constantly protected during the most dangerous days of the movement by body guards. Especialy in the deep south, it is not at all clear that anyone would have surived long enough to lead a voter registration drive without the armed protection of men with guns. Certainly, it was the risk of outright war that motivated the federal government to intervene.

One must ask, reading Elmer's account, where today's activists are. Is there a cause today for which you would be willing to defy the wrath of the entire federal government and spend years in prison?

Ethics in Action

I've long known that during the '60s and '70s there were many protests against the Vietnam War. But my knowledge, I confess, didn't go much beyond that. Thanks to this entertaining and informative book, my embarrassing ignorance has been greatly reduced.

Elmer's book opened my eyes to the many forms that protests took, such as the destruction of records at draft boards across the country. I also learned about the kinds of personalities involved in protest actions, and about their motivations and philosophies. Those who called themselves pacifists varied in their views. When it came time to issue statements to the press and public, words were chosen carefully. Participants in covert actions didn't always agree on whether and how to reveal what they'd done.

The book raises many questions I'd never thought about, such as whether destroying draft records is a violent act, and many questions I haven't thought about enough, such as why so many people who feel strongly about something fail to take action. Elmer ties his experiences in with other pacifist movements, such as Gandhi's, and explores ethical issues in a very accessible way.

This is a personal history book that's well worth reading. Elmer faced many tough questions and decisions in his life and took many risks in the service of humanity. The book is inspirational and often moving. When Elmer was being interviewed as he applied for a license to practice law in Rhode Island (and legitimately worried that he might be rejected due to his "criminal" past), his interviewer said, "My brother was classified 1-A when you [destroyed draft files in Providence]. You probably saved his life. I've been waiting 20 years to thank you. You're approved."

Haym Salomon, a Jewish refugee from Poland, arrived in New York in the spring of 1775, just weeks after shots were first exchanged between British soldiers and Americans at Lexington and Concord.

He found a job as a distiller and in his free time studied the grievances of the thirteen colonies issued by Congress. Then he joined the Sons of Liberty and became a provisions supplier for American troops at Lake George.

Twice, Salomon was arrested by the British and thrown into Provost Prison by Warden William Cunningham, and twice he escaped. Once, he offered to serve as a German interpreter for the Hessian mercenaries-who he convinced to join liberty's cause. Next, he convinced his Hessian guard to unlock his door, in exchange for a free passage to desert to Washington's side.

His second escape brought Salomon to the Dobbes Ferry landing, where none of the troops owned a complete uniform, new musket or unbent bayonet. The men were thin, dressed in buckskin shirts and coonskin caps, and their shoes were tied with rope. Salomon, at 40, realized he was too old to serve himself, but he proposed to General Alexander McDougall that he could assist the cause by raising money from the Jewish community in Philadelphia, 100 miles away. Though ill, he set off on foot to do his patriotic best.

In Philadelphia, he began trading and his success brought the notice and respect of detractors who had once baited him as the "haggler Jew" or "Jew broker." Before long, he had earned enough to give money to the Continental Congress and its army. His first gestures were to General Casimir Pulaski, who had been authorized by Congress to raise the Pulaski legion.

Robert Morris, the head of Willing and Morris, had reluctantly accepted control of all finances to pay for the Revolution. He was soon at his wits' end in efforts to give the necessary help. He even approached the Quakers, though he reportedly demeaned them. But he could not bring himself to ask for money from Jews.

Finally, the situation grew so bad that General Washington himself appealed to Morris to see Haym Salomon. On Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, Morris at last sought Salomon's help. In fifteen minutes, Salomon raised $20,000 from the congregation of Jewish worshipers, who were anxious to save American soldiers from starvation and cold. As news of Salomon's devotion spread, he was approached by all the famous officers and politicians of the day--including John Paul Jones, General Daniel Morgan, Thomas Jefferson, Thaddeus Kosciusko and General Benjamin Lincoln.

Salomon bankrupted his family with his generosity. But when his wife asked whether there would be any inheritance for their children, he said, "Yes, a country where they'll be free to differ in the way they worship God and still enjoy the friendship of other people." They would have opportunities for happiness equal to that of others, and a feeling of being as important to the new nation as anyone else.

Soon, Salomon was buying French army bills to support the young nation's ally. French minister Chevalier de la Luzerne called on Salomon and said, "[You] in your little office on Front Street are doing for the nation's credit what Washington is doing on the battlefield for the people's independence."

In September 1783 the treaty of peace was formally signed in Paris. Haym Salomon was responsible for the financial success of the Revolutionary War.

This is an important book for children to understand the contribution of minorities to America's founding.

Haym Salomon Son of Liberty by Howard Fast is a much better book on this subject. The cover says it is written for "young people" but it is so well written that adults would enjoy it also.

An American Hero of Jewish Decent.

In a moment that transcended time and space Haym Solomon bailed out the United States and saved our Soldiers. He loaned all he had to George Washington and the Continental Congress when the America was on a precipice.

He was never repaid his loan that bough shoes for the troops and saved the nation. To this day his heirs have recieved no money and no prais. You have to read this book to understand what a real hero is.

About the Author

Bill Easum is president of 21st Century Strategies, Inc. and is one of the most highly respected church consultants and Christian futurists in North America. He has been a pioneer in the church growth movement, with thirty-five years of pastoral ministry experience. The author of several books, he is also the editor of On Track E-Magazine, and is a contributor to Rev Magazine and Net Results.
Jim Griffith is the founder of Griffith Coaching Network, a network of coaches committed to helping church leaders and congregations launch new ventures and daughter churches. A veteran of several church plants, he's assessed more than 1,900 church planting candidates, trained more than 7,000 planters, and coached more than 1,500 new and existing churches in their efforts to reach the mission field around them.

An Important Book for Church Planters

The two authors of this book of 122 pages are experienced in church planting and growth. In my own ministry of church planting consultancy, I often share jokingly that one of the reasons I can help other in church planting is the number of mistakes I have made myself. The school of mistakes is a helpful school as we seek to help others.

So here Griffith and Easum walk church planters through ten common mistakes made in church planting. This book along with the book by Tom Nebel and Gary Rohrmayer entitled Church Planting Landmines: Mistakes to Avoid in Years 2 through 10 (St. Charles, IL: Church Smart, 2005) should be basic required reading for all church planters.

If the "ten mistakes" of this book are put together with the "ten landmines" of Nebel and Rohrmayer, one will notice many similarities. At the same time, each will approach those similarities with different nuances. Then all church planters with be richer and more effective as avoid these mistakes and work their way around these landmines.

How much I wish I would have had this book when my wife and I were involved in our first church plant and daughter church plant.

Great tool!

I have shared this book with our current planters and with established pastors. Both are finding it very practical and useful.
Personally, besides the chapter content, I appreciate the advice to the planter, the coach and the supervisor. Any intuitive planter will use these components. Coaches and supervisors are have common points to work with in dialogue with the planters.
In a plethora of books in this genre, this one is worth the price.

Although it suffers from lapses into artless, abrupt and even bombastic prose, this work has considerable merit and interest as a social document. Michael fled his native Iraq to escape hanging as a leftist during WW II; after 25 years as a field worker in Israel, he began to publish fiction. Refuge , which follows Equal and More Equal , chronicles the activities of various Jewish and Arab members of Israel's Communist Party during the first days of the 1973 war. Marduch, an Iraqi Jewish immigrant and Zionist by default, enters combat to repay a debt to the country that gave him refuge. His wife Shula is left to cope with their retarded son, with her feelings for a former lover and career officer who is lost in battle and with an Arab comrade seeking sanctuary in her home from the Israelis. Michael trains his gaze on Israeli Communists, who are seldom scrutinized in fiction, to reveal a party struggling with hypocrisy and rife with anti-Semitic Arabs and Arab-hating Jews, misogynists and conformists.

Identity, Eros, and the Arab Israel Conflict

Sami Michael's Refuge is an ambitious novel which attempts to do a great deal in a small amount of space. That Michael largely succeeds is a testimony to his great gifts as a novelist. The main flaw of the book is that Michael has perhaps too many main characters, and this dilutes the thrust of the novel, the momentum, and the reader's ability to respond to the plight of the characters. But on the upside, Michael is able to create a great deal of tension in this novel. He moves fluidly from the Israeli Jewish world, the world of Israeli Arabs, Palestinian Arabs, and every identity in between, and is completely at home in each. He tackles the thorny subject of sexual relations between Israeli Jews and Arabs, making it the fulcrum for his examination of Arab-Jewish relations. Violence, sex, and identity become entwined in interesting and novel ways in Refuge, surprising and even shocking the reader.

A story of complex identities

Sami Michael weaves the intricate and complex plot which is Refuge by introducing the reader to a large number of characters, all of whom have very complex identities. He tells of the Israeli Jew who was born in Iraq, and the Arab with Israeli citizenship who visits his cousins in a Palestinian refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. The multiple layers of each of the numerous characters we meet succeed in opening the readers' eyes to the layers of complexity which are Israeli society.
