Good but there is better

Baruch Levine's commentary on Leviticus/Vayikra is commendable. The Hebrew text is easy to read with the English translation set out alongside it and the commentary appearing below. Levine ably brings modern scholarship as well as rabbinic commentary to bear when discussing the text. However, for my money, a far better commentary on Leviticus has been done by Jacob Milgrom in the Anchor Bible series. Milgrom's work is far more thorough and groundbreaking. I would recommend that you look at Milgrom's commentary before purchasing Levine's.

Illuminating and inspiring

Like all the volumes in the JPS Torah commentary series, this volume is simplythe best in its area. It contains the complete Hebrew text of Genesis, the JPS's new English translation, and an extensive original commentary that illuminates the text like a 1000 watt searchlight. On average, each four or five lines of text gets a full page of explanation and commentary, so every subject gets covered in detail.
Levine, like all the JPS Torah commentators, makes use of traditional rabbinic commentaries, and the Mishna, Midrash and Talmud. But it doesn't end here: The commentary goes on to make good use of literary analysis and comparative Semitics; intertextual commentary relating each book to other biblical books, and evidence from modern archaeological, discoveries.
Especially illuminating is his treatment and analysis of the meaning of Tenple sacrifices, described in the context of the Biblical world's era and ouevre. Unlike the Reform commentary, this work manages to be respectful, religious, and authentic to the Jewish tradition, while at the same time rigorously adhering to the highest standards of biblical criticism and intellectual honesty.

This is a very good Bible commentary

This is the third in the five book JPS series on the Five Books of Moses, called by its Greek name,the Pentateuch. The name Leviticus was also derived from the third century BCE Greek translation, called the Septuagint. The title focuses on the contents of the volume, which deals primarily with the Levitical Priests.

The great Jewish philosopher Moses Maimonides (1138-1204) stated in his Guide of the Perplexed that God neither wants nor needs sacrifices. Since most modern people would agree with this sage and since the volume focuses mostly on sacrifices, Baruch A. Levine, who wrote the commentary to this biblical book, would be expected to have problems explaning the sacrifices. However, he draws on ancient and modern writings, Jewish and non-Jewish, and he handles his task well.

In addition to his commentaries on each verse, Levine includes an extensive three-dozen page introduction that addresses the scriptural text, the book's content, when it was written, the priesthood, the sanctuary and its cult, among other matters. He also introduces some twenty sections with additional extensive explanations on such subjects as the types of sacrifices, the laws of kosher, the unique Yom Kippur Tabernacle ritual, the laws of holiness, and the Jewish calendar.

An example of his commentary is his comment that the usual translation of benei yisrael as the "children of Israel" is unsatisfactory. It fails to express the concept of peoplehood. The proper translation of this idiomatic phrase is, Levine explains, "the Israelite people."

Gene Fowler is a pastor in the Presbyterian Church (USA), serving in St. Louis, MO. He has a Ph.D. in Pastoral Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary and writes about the ministry of care in the congregational setting. In addition to writing about caring for the bereaved, Dr. Fowler is exploring the relationship between congregational transformation and the ministry of care. He also is working on congregational health and illness during this era of Protestant decline in the United States.

Alice Guy BlachT (1873-1968), the world's first woman filmmaker, was one of the key figures in the development of narrative film. From 1896 to 1920 she directed 400 films (including over 100 synchronized sound films), produced hundreds more, and was the first—and so far the only—woman to own and run her own studio plant (The Solax Studio in Fort Lee, NJ, 1910-1914). However, her role in film history was completely forgotten until her own memoirs were published in 1976. This new book tells her life story and fills in many gaps left by the memoirs. Guy BlachT's life and career mirrored momentous changes in the film industry, and the long time-span and sheer volume of her output makes her films a fertile territory for the application of new theories of cinema history, the development of film narrative, and feminist film theory. The book provides a close analysis of the one hundred Guy BlachT films that survive, and in the process rewrites early cinema history.

About the Author
Alison McMahan is a Mellon Fellow in Visual Culture at Vassar College. From 1997 to 2001 she ran the MA program in film and television studies at the University of Amsterdam, where she taught early cinema and new media. She has published widely on early cinema and has carried out research for documentaries such as The Lost Garden: The Life and Work of Alice Guy Blaché (1995, National Film Board of Canada) and for the Emmy-award winning Into the Light ('State of the Arts' series, New Jersey Network, 1995). She was interviewed as an early cinema expert for the documentary Reel Models: The Women of Early Film which first aired on the American Movie Classics Channel in 2000.

Fascinating, remarkable research

This book is an amazing labor of love. I should admit that before reading it, I knew very little about the book's subject, Alice Guy. The same can clearly not be said of the author, Alison McMahan, who shows an extreme devotion to the work of her subject - not merely in picking through it, analysing it, explaining it, and bringing it to life, but in hunting it down in the first place.
Note that I referred to the author's devotion to the WORK of her subject. This is not a biography - more a loving excavation of the career of an extraordinary woman, with many personal details and anecdotes thrown in for good measure. But in the light of the recent survey I read which showed that only 5% of Hollywood films are directed by women (forgive me if I've got that figure wrong, but it was tiny, anyway), the career of Alice Guy seems utterly remarkable. The fact that this woman achieved so much in such a short space of time, in the very earliest days of the film industry, will truly make you stop and think.
I would willingly have given this book 5 stars, except for two reasons. First, there are a handful of typographical errors - for which I cannot blame the author, but they did irritate me; secondly, (and I'm being selfish here) I wanted to read more - and yet the end of the book is taken up with an enormous list of Alice Guy's films, which I am sure will be of great use to scholars, but left me feeling a tiny bit short-changed. But I'd hate to end on a negative note, so I'll say this: Alison McMahan has written a highly original and inspiring book, and I hope that many more people get to read it.

Harmonies for all of us

What a delightful read. Although I am not a hiker, I enjoy being an armchair explorer and Smith's book brings nature close to hand. The unique and insightful perspectives on hiking makes one believe they are also experiencing his awe of the wilderness. Although many books have been written about nature, Smith is able to see and share the unique in what others would describe as common. His encounters with wild animals are related to the reader in such a way as to impact on all your senses. His book also exposes the reader to the Native American culture in the Southwest, including new vocabulary and traditions. One of the most interesting aspects of Smith's book, for an armchair explorer, is the accessibility of his experiences rather than the exotic, available to the few. It feels as though I could experience everything he has by following in his footsteps.
Throughout Smith's book, there is an underlying theme of camaraderie, showing nature can be shared with others and yet he is able find moments of solitude at the same time. If you wish to explore nature in the Southwest, there is no better guide than Smith. His writing style is very conversational and filled with images you can recreate very easily in your own mind. For those of us who are not ardent hikers, this is a great way to have a very memorable vicarious experience with nature. Do yourself a favor, take some time from your busy schedule and enjoy the outdoors through the eyes of a marvelous writer.

Memories rekindled

Growing up I traveled frequently to the West and Southwest with my parents (a geologist and an anthropologist) on trips to complete field work. Mountain Harmonies captures the wonderful spirit of the West that I came to know on those many forays. The many fine stories in this book brought back fond memories of those trips with my parents. Of all the rales I really enjoyed the encounters with grizzly and black bears because for me they symbolize natures purity. This is an engaging and enjoyable book.

Nothing to learn

The discription of this book sounds good. It will make you think that you are going to learn from this book. In reality, you must have the audio tapes or the book is useless. I can't find the tapes to purchase.

Good reference but a poor teacher!

This book is a good reference book if you are already transcribing. It is useless as a teaching tool without the audio tapes. The audio tapes are expensive for 6 - 90 minute tapes and must be ordered from Delmar Publishers. Unless you are enrolled in a class and have the tapes available from your school I would not recommend this book for beginners.

simply too dated to be useful

This is one of those books that simply no longer exists now that the internet is around. It contains ideas and references for various Jewish events. Much of the data is simply no longer accurate, and some seems to be useless in all times. I'm not sure if this book was ever useful except as a starting point for people who knew nothing about Judaism but wanted to "be Jewish" and were to afraid (or didn't know anyone) to ask. Nowadays, even that segment of the population would find this book fairly useless.

The Power of the BOOK!

I have owned the first book for over thirty years. It has been my go-to source all this time. My copy is all loose sheets, binding long gone, many articles and downloaded supplements incorporated. There is no better foundation for why and how to be Jewish. (Disclaimer: I have almost finished the internet!)

THE SECOND OF THREE VERY USEFUL CATALOGS

This 1976 book is the follow-up to the 1973 The First Jewish Catalog: A Do-It-Yourself Kit. The editors wrote, "The truth is... we never planned to do another Jewish Catalog. The success of Catalog I and the deluge of requests from you, the reader, for additional information caused us to reconsider. And so we embarked on a second Catalog venture. Midway through, we realized we could not put everything into only one more volume. So we've decided to complete a trilogy, with yet another volume soon to come (The Third Jewish Catalog: Creating Community : With a Cumulative Index to All 3 Catalogs). By now it is common knowledge that Catalog I grew out of the havurah community. In many ways, however, the whole enterprise has moved beyond that community into a community that includes the many people who took Catalog I seriously, yet had never even seen a havurah... It is our hope that ... this new volume will also play a vital role in the movement's future."

There are sections on "Life Cycle," "Study," "Synagogue and Prayer," and "The Arts." Here are some quotations from the book:

"It will certainly seem strange to many people that the origins of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah... are shrouded in mystery, controversy, and scholarly debate. The reason for the lack or precise information is clear. The Bible fails to mention either a Bar Mitzvah celebration or to give any indication that thirteen was considered the demarcation line..." (Pg. 61)
"John Calvin was astonished at not finding any explicit reference to fornication among the sexual prohibitions of the Torah... The halakah, however, in Midrash and Talmud, interprets Leviticus 19:29 ... as referring to consensual relations without benefit of marriage." (Pg. 95)
