A Good Introduction

Despite the number of introductions to Aquinas already available, Davies justifies the decision to produce one more by explicitly and repeatedly situating this book vis-a-vis some of the latest and best Aquinas scholarship at the time of the book's writing. Because of this, the book feels fresh and relevant--it is clearly Aquinas read in the light of early 21st-century academic and theological concerns.

'Aquinas' also benefits from Davies' incredibly lucid prose. Complex problems are presented as simply as possible, in an inviting, almost casual tone that brings to mind the intimate feel of a seminar, rather than a boring, impersonal lecture hall. The author's presentation of the subject matter should reassure and encourage those who might otherwise be intimidated by the writings of Aquinas and his explicators.

All-in-all, a compact, well-written, and thorough introduction to Aquinas.

Lots of information on the hidden /Crypto Jews. Not all of the information was factual from a halachic point of view. And most of the commentaries are in Spanish. The book is written in English, why would you put the commentaries in Spanish? I don't read Spanish and I'm sure many other people don't either. So next time have the reader be ware and let us know that we won't have an easy time of reading the commentaries!-Lisa

Ralph Waller provides a valuable service with his short portrait of John Wesley. Beginning with a chronological presentation he shifts focus shortly after his Moravian experience to focus more on themes such as predestination, opposition, the nature of being a traveling preacher, and social concerns. Waller brings the results of excellent scholarship into a solid, readable work. An excellent introduction to Wesley's thought and life.

Real-World Planning

As the pastor of a new church, one of my biggest concerns is "How can we create an organizational culture that constantly pushes us to be all we can be for God?" Bud Wrenn's book is an attempt to help churches answer that challenge.
Before I get too far, I probably should include a disclaimer. Bud Wrenn is a good friend of mine. That's one reason I put off reading and reviewing my advanced copy. I mean, what if it stinks?
Well, I shouldn't have worried. The book is fantastic. And any lingering concerns were eliminated in chapter 3: "Visional Planning." I'm a visionary leader. This chapter is the best treatment of visionary leadership and planning I have ever read. And the four-step approach to planning (Visional, Missional, Strategic and Tactical) is both an excellent approach and a great way to understand where different people can best fit into the planning process.
Bud's years of experience, both in the corporate world and church environments provides a wealth of illustrations and a workable strategy for leading a church to capture and fulfill its God-given vision. And while many non-fiction books have enough good ideas for about eighty pages (then pad and repeat information to make it long enough to merit a cover instead of a staple), this book is packed with great info and insight throughout its nearly 200 pages.
The book is not without its weaknesses. The author likes dictionary definitions a little much for my taste and his prose style indicates he's a speaker first, then a writer. Sometimes in his zest he goes a little too deep into planning specifics. It wouldn't be hard to imagine a church with a certain style leadership getting so caught up in the details of planning they never get around to ministry.
But compared to the wealth of solid, practical information available in its pages, the quibbles are inconsequential. As our church works to create an organization that can fulfill our vision, Bud Wrenn's book is about to become our church's textbook.

Coming down from 35,000 feet

I just finished reading a book entitled, "Innovative Planning: Your Church in 4-D," written by my good friend, Bud Wrenn. Bud is the founding pastor of Integrity Community Church, the Director of the Innovative Church Community and a former corporate executive. His book reflects the wealth of experience that he has gained in all those positions. Whether you work in the sacred or the secular world, If you are a student of leadership, you'll find this book a must read.

I consider myself a student of leadership truths and principles. And as others have said, "All truth is God's truth," so, I believe that the principles taught in Bud's book are applicable in all types of organizations.

The real help I've received from this book is the understanding of how to "land the plane." This book helps dreamers like myself come down from the clouds, get our bearings, lower the landing gear, and land the plane in the desired destination. For those of us who love having conversations at "35,000 feet," this book offers us steps to bring our dreams to earth.

After all dreams are only dreams, unless we take steps to accomplish them. Bud Wrenn's book helps us discover and take those steps.

Hit the nail on the head!

As a "big picture" pastor, I needed a perspective on planning that would break things down into bite-sized pieces. What blew me away was this book was written for detailed pastors who need to see the broader vision, too. Bud Wrenn has hit a home run that covers all dimensions of planning. This will apply to both the unorganized or organized. It is a great tool for leaders in church (or business) to pass on to their staff or volunteers. If your pastor and church leaders haven't read it, do them a favor and put this book in their hands!

It's an ok introduction to the topic

This book was recommended. However, I think that I have been in industry too long as I had seen most of these jigs and fixtures over time and so it ended up not having much new information for me. I hadn't really every classified them into types and so that was a new thought. This would be a good college text book for students that had never been exposed to Jigs and Fixtures. Of course it is also a little dated at this point.

He is the author of The Origins of Courtliness: Civilizing Trends and the Formation of Courtly Ideals, 939-1210, and The Envy of Angels: Cathedral Schools and Social Ideals in Medieval Europe, 950-1200, all available from the University of Pennsylvania Press.

Gentry is Professor and Codirector at the Max Kade German-American Research Institute at The Pennsylvania State University.

About the Author
Freelance journalist Sam Quinones lived in Mexico for 10 years, publishing two books of narrative nonfiction about the country. He then worked for 10 years for the LA Times before once again returning to freelance writing.
    His latest book is Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic, published in 2015 by Bloomsbury Press.
    In 2001 he published a highly acclaimed collection of stories about contemporary Mexico, True Tales from Another Mexico: the Lynch Mob, the Popsicle Kings, Chalino and the Bronx (UNM Press).
    In 2007, he published Antonio's Gun and Delfino's Dream: True Tales of Mexican Migration (UNM Press).
He is the recipient of both a Alicia Patterson Fellowship and, from Columbia University, a Maria Moors Cabot Prize, awarded for a career of excellence in the covering Latin America.

Informative look at the Mexican immigration to USA

I was reluctant to read this book, thinking that it would be very distressing. However, I was amazed at the variety of people about whom the author wrote. It was overall very interesting. The writing itself was in the style of a newspaper reporter, as expected by the background of the author. I feel that I have a better understanding of the variety of motives behind the northern migration, and the difficulties behind the lack of assimilation of long term Mexican residents in the US. The last story was a real thriller.

I really love Sam Quinones' books on Mexico and his stories. It is hard for me to move away from superlatives: each story is a true gem. I feel that the cover, which is a painting, takes so many stories from Mexican life, whether lived in Mexico or here in the U.S., and turns them into the Mexican versions of Norman Rockwell paintings, transformed into words. The story of Delfino, from peasant to breakdancer to builder, is worthy of its own feature film and would transform the immigrant story to that of pioneer. It's an American success story for Mexico, the kind of story that Americans would enjoy seeing and identifying with his courage.
