About the Author

Franklyn Schaefer is a former ordained minister of United Methodist Church where he ministered for more than 20 years until December 2013. He is married to Brigitte and has four children. He was educated at Princeton Theological Seminary and also earned a CPE degree at Hershey Medical Center's residency program for chaplains. In 2013, Franklyn Schaefer was tried by a United Methodist court for officiating his son's same-sex marriage and was defrocked over his refusal to uphold the Book of Discipline, which meant virtually to denounce gay marriage rights. Now a United Methodist lay person, speaker and activist, he continues to advocate for human rights.

Sherri Wood Emmons is a freelance writer and editor and has published three novels. She is a graduate of Earlham College and the University of Denver Publishing Institute. A mother of three, she lives in Indiana with her husband, two fat beagles, and four spoiled cats.

This is a well written book telling the amazing story of a father's love for his children as well as his belief in God's will for ALL of His children to be loved and treated with love, respect and compassion. It will open your eyes as well as your heart.

PIning for the earlier work

I have a big place in my heart for N. Scott Momaday. After taking a course with him many years ago, I entered the amazing world of Native American literature and haven't looked back. I was always more impressed with his unrhymed beautiful poetry than his rhymed work. This volume, which does contain some older work as a retrospective, does become somewhat tiresome with the traditional European rhyme schemes and meter. As a result, this book seems weaker to me than most of his previous volumes. If you are a Momaday fan, it is essential to have this in your collection, but if you are new to this master of American literature, begin with earlier books or a previous collected works.

Although known primarily as a country music star, Marty Stuart has been taking photographs of the people and places surrounding him since he first went on tour with bluegrass performer Lester Flatt at age twelve. His inspirations to do this include his own mother, Hilda Stuart, whom he watched document their family's everyday life in Mississippi, bassist Milt Hinton's photographs of fellow jazz artists, and Edward Curtis's well-known images of Native Americans at the turn of the twentieth century. Stuart's work ranges from intimate and often candid behind-the-scenes depictions of legendary musicians, to images that capture the eccentricities of characters from the back roads of America, to dignified portraits of members of the impoverished Lakota tribe in South Dakota, a people he was introduced to through his former father-in-law, Johnny Cash. Whatever the subject, Stuart is able to sensitively tease out something unexpected or hidden beneath the surface through a skillful awareness of timing and composition as well as a unique relationship with many of the subjects based on years of friendship and trust.

This book will present images from these three bodies of work: "Badlands," on his time with the Lakota; "The Masters," from his work with musicians like Bill Monroe, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Dolly Parton, George Jones, Kitty Wells, Willie Nelson, and Waylon Jennings; and "Blue Line Hot Shots." As Stuart explains, "The newly built Interstate Highway System was at one time represented on our maps by the color red, while the two-lane highways and back roads of the nation were represented in blue. The back roads are where you'll find some of the people that I admire, respect, and always keep an eye out for. ... They are renegades … As Roger Miller once said, 'These people flush to the beat of a different plumber.' "

The photographs are framed by an introduction by Stuart and a context-setting essay by photography historian Susan Edwards, executive director of the First Center for the Visual Arts. The book and accompanying exhibition at the First Center demonstrate that Marty Stuart is a master storyteller not only through his songs but also through his revealing and compelling photographs.

"When I first began traveling I loved the adventure of going from town to town and exploring what each place had to offer. Whenever possible, on the day of the show I walked the streets and back roads, gathering stories and songs from local folks. I studied everything from the different kinds of architecture that surrounded me to the majesty of the sunsets and how they affected the mood of the town I was in. That first season was filled with the joy of a new musical life taking flight. The applause, the spotlight, the sparkle of the fame, the freedom of 'here today, go somewhere else tomorrow' charmed me night after night, day after day, until show business found its mark and became a way of life. I enjoyed every minute of the dance. I still love those things, but most of all it's the people that I've enjoyed along the way, namely the characters. The kind of characters who can be defined as American originals."

About the Author
Kathryn Delmez has been a curator at the Frist Center since 2001. She was introduced to Marty Stuart's photographs through a small exhibition at the Cheekwood Museum of Art in 1999 and came to know them better while working closely with Stuart on a 2004 exhibition devoted to his friend fashion designer and clothier Manuel.

A masterpiece by an American master

This is one the best $ values I have found in many years. As a photographer, Stuart,who is self taught but has the eye of a great visual artist as well as a person who was in the right place at the right time. The deep emotional insights in these photos could only be made by someone who loved this genre from 'the inside' of traditional Country music and it's great prophets .
Stuarts photographs have also made me appreciate his genius as both a musician and a racontier of the culture and personalities of traditional 20th Century Americana music. This is a masterpiece.

Purchased based on an NPR interview with Marty Stuart. It is a beautiful treasure of the pictorial history of Country Music.

Love music, musicians and b/w photography

Love music, musicians and b/w photography. This book was recommended by a luthier's wife at the Healdsburg Guitar Show in Santa Rosa in 2013. I heard the luthier, Marty, play his two guitars he made and his wife added some informational background on the songs he played and the guitar's construction. Well, after that performance I visited their display table in the show and had a great time talking with them both. It was the highlight of the show.

About the Author
Professor Raymond S. Edge, EdD, RRT is the author of several textbooks on health care ethics and law. During an academic career extending over three decades, he served as a dean and full professor at several major universities where in addition to teaching and administrative duties, he established faculty and student educational exchange programs with the People's Republic of China and traveled and lectured extensively in that nation. Since retiring from university teaching and administration, he has pursued his passion for regional history and culture, completing a three-book archeological fiction series based on actual Mississippi River sites and artifacts. His 2015 S: MEMOIR OF AN ICONIC GENTLEMAN recently won a silver book award in the category of best seasonal book.

About the Author
David Sauter is currently an instructor at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, California and is a registered Landscape Architect in the State of California. Prior to his teaching career, Mr. Sauter practiced as a consulting landscape architect in the Midwest. He has additional experience in plant maintenance, plant installation, landscape construction, masonry, carpentry, paving, and landscape management and has presented seminars for the nursery industry, master gardeners, extension services and public service organizations. David Sauter earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Landscape Architecture at Iowa State University and his Master of Arts Degree in Higher Education from The University of Iowa.

Great Professional Book

This book is full of incredible and professional information related to Landscape Construction. It's not meant to be a DIY book you'd get from Home Depot or Lowes. This book is meant for students and professionals wanting to learn best practices regarding Landscape Construction. Amateurs, landscape designers and architects can gain some valuable insights, too. We used this book as our textbook in the various landscape construction classes I took, studying to be a landscape designer.

An Essential Resource For Landscape Contractors

I'm glad I decided to buy this book, despite its high price. Having just recently become a landscape designer/contractor, it proved invaluable many times in the course of our company's first big job. For example, the sections on stone paving were very helpful when we were building a flagstone patio, as they helped us select the best foundation and edging materials.

I like the way the book is arranged, i.e. having a large section on paving, beginning with materials and site preparation for paving in general. This is followed by a chapter on each of the specific paving materials, such as concrete, unit pavers, dry laid stones, mortared paving, and granular paving.

The extensive section on retaining walls, which I am about to take advantage of in our next job, is arranged similarly.

This book is the industry standard. It is used as a text in City College of San Francisco, and it is also listed as a resource in the California Contractor's State License Board's Study Guide for the Landscaping (C-27) License Examination.

So if you want to do landscape construction, I highly recommend this one.

I found this book to be very thorough and detailed in its approach to a variety of landscape construction issues. It has detailed pictures and diagrams that illustrate the processes and make it easier to understand. The information is up to date, easy to read and a great learning tool for the student, professional or hobby person. As a landscape student, I find it a great resource book.

" Beside Quiet Waters " an inspirational book on the Psalms

I read a different Psalm in this book each day. No matter who you are or what walk of life you come from this book will reflect some of your daily views of life or values. I find some of the authors quotes about the psalms to be very comforting in times when I am down. He uses everyday life to reflect on the Psalms and bring them to life. All in all i enjoy reading a different Psalm and passage each day to give me a bright outlook on the new day ahead. Sometimes it just inspires me to press on when every thing seems so bleak and dim. I'll reflect on a funny story the author brings to life and i'll smile. I think that if your in for a great book look no further than " Beside Quiet Waters "

Titanically enjoyable!

The relation of the psalms to real life was a satisfying feeling for me to read. Once I started to read, I didn't stop. Pretty soon the 200 pages was over, and I wanted more. Let's hope Dr. Capozzi shares more of his metaphorically rich works. Pure self-serving motivation!

This book brings the Psalms into our everyday lives. The book can be used for daily reflections or as simple readings to meditate on. I found that the vast majority of the reflections pertained to things that happen to me in my everyday life. I felt as if the author was speaking to me personally. This book realates lines in the Psalms to things that happen everyday to us. For example, he writes about family, jobs, friends, illness, politics, and sports. I never knew that the Bible could be applied to such a wide variety of topics. In short, this was one of the most soothing books I have read!

This curriculum is thoughtful, thorough and concise. Such a great guide for introducing kids to these spiritual concepts and preparing them for a life of discipleship. My daughter LOVED the weekend she spent exploring the themes outlined in the Tour of Life.

Everyone involved grew deeper in their faith - thank you!

This tour was a wonderful way to engage disciples and mentors in conversations about all the connections of life - how our Christian identity is fully integrated into everything we do in the world, and how we can respond to God's call through baptism and a commitment to a church community. I especially appreciated the emphasis on baptism as just the start of a journey - not the end result. The disciples appreciated knowing that they weren't supposed to have all the answers now, but would be supported in their growth in the midst of a community that will encourage their continued questions, and a community that would receive the gifts they have to offer to ministry.

I led a group of 5th and 6th graders and their mentors through the workbook and tour stops, and was so excited to hear the questions they came up with and felt free to ask, especially in some new experiences at a midwife clinic and a funeral home. Everyone involved grew deeper in their faith. Thank you!
