TURNING SOULS ON FIRE

WOW! There are many volumes written about prayer and repentance. Mostly they are archaic, dry, technical. Very few are inspiring, motivating the reader to actually try out what is suggested. What an extraordinary exception to the rule with Prof. Schochet's "Deep Calling Unto Deep." It makes these themes come alive. There is no preaching, no brow-beating. It explains, it elucidates. It is not simplistic religious dogmatism. The author raises profound philosophical questions, critically examines all premises and analyzes them in terms attractive and attracting to scholar and layman alike. Questions like "why pray"? Doesn't God know what you need? Are you not interfering with Divine Providence by asking for changes in its plans? How can God change His mind according to your wishes? How can repentance wipe out the past? How and when would you know that there was true repentance? How can prayer and repentaqnce work without violating theological premises? And so forth. Mixing philosophy, theology, mysticism and Hassidic teachings, Schochet explains, illuminates, resolves, without ever being dogmatic or judgmental. Above all it is so inspiring it turns your soul on fire and makes you appreciate these complex concepts. Extensive references, indices and bibliographies, make this a true treasure and reference-book, to which you will continue to come back to. I don't believe that it has its equal among all the many books I read on these subjects. Four thumbs up!

Important Read for all churches

Good, practical book but lack some doctrinal depth

Stay in a church long enough and you will find out that one of the most common way people evangelise to their friends or family is through invitation to their church. So how can one utilise this and help the church grow?

Laurene Beth Bowers has written a very helpful book to help pastors and ministry leaders think through about their own invitational ministry, and how they can continue to help this ministry grow. First Bowers tackles the idea that is pervasive in church all around, that the church needs to “take care” of themselves before they can reach out to others.

Bowers then moves to show what she means by invitational ministry, first she shows the differences between evangelism and invitational ministry, she shows how invitational ministry involves not only the people you intent to reach out to, it also involves the person who is doing the reaching out. The benefit of invitational ministry is that it takes into consideration both groups of people.

Bowers is honest to point out that some churches may only intend to work on the invitational ministry just so to increase their number of attendees or just so that the offering may increase. This is a real issue and Bowers do give some good insights into how to handle with this issue. Bowers talks about practical issues like defeatist mindset that members might have, or about churches that invests low energy into invitational ministries but unrealistically expects big results from them.

She also gives good ideas on how to help church generate ideas, and gives excellent suggestions on how to deal with this issue. She also suggests a new method of selecting and managing teams planning for events. Though I’ve yet to tried it, I do have my suspicion on whether it might actually help in the planning process.

This book is also not without its’ weakness. First, it seems as though that Bowers is more concern about how to phrase and train church members on how to answers potential questions that people may ask (i.e. their intentions to invite them, etc..) rather than addressing the heart issue of why the members are not evangelising. Bowers also suggests that churches may take a sabbatical from formal worship service.

This book will help readers think about invitational ministry in churches. Bowers offers many tips and good suggestions to think and use, but is lacking in doctrinal depth.

The Stations were commissioned for St John on Bethnal Green, a visually prominent London Anglican church designed by Sir John Soane, the neo-classical architect who also created the Bank of England and the Dulwich Picture Gallery. The church stands on the boundary between Hackney and Tower Hamlets and is therefore in one of the more deprived and multi-cultural areas of the UK. In 2001 the congregation made the extraordinary decision to commission a site-specific Stations of the Cross, the traditional 14 pictures of the last day of Jesus' human life, used from the Middle Ages onwards for meditation and prayer (and established in their usual form by St Francis of Assisi, who is also credited with introducing the better-known Christmas crib scene - the two come out of the same spiritual tradition). Perhaps unexpectedly, they chose a contemporary artist not best known for his religious works: Chris Gollon (see www.chrisgollon.com). The Rector described the reasoning: "The church of St John on Bethnal Green has had a long-standing involvement with people on the fringes of our society, the sort of people who often figure in Chris' paintings. His work contains many religious allusions and forms, which do not suggest conformity but challenge. These are the themes we wish to explore in this series of the Stations of the Cross and it is vital to have an artist who is not "safe" but perceptive and unsettling in interpreting the traditions. Chris has our confidence on all these counts."

It was a risky commission for everyone involved because at the time there was no money to pay Gollon, and the stations have been paid for one by one by an odd variety of sponsors, including the parishioners themselves, public art bodies and various private donors. By Easter 2008 the whole series was completed; the sequence was first used on Good Friday when the pictures gained considerable media attention. The commission for the Stations has taken 8 years to fulfil and they have been widely featured in national broadsheets, arts press and all denominations of religious arts press. The paintings are now reflected in a sequence of stories: first-person narratives by a well-known author who has been closely involved with the project.

About the Author
Sara Maitland was born in 1950. Her first novel Daughter of Jerusalem won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1979. Since then she has published five more novels and six collections of short stories. In March 2008 Maia press published Far North and Other Dark Tales to celebrate the launch of the film "Far North", directed by Asif Kapadia and starring Michelle Yeoh and Sean Bean, which was based on that dark tale. She also writes non-fiction, particularly theology like A Big Enough God and, Angel and Me (both from Continuum), and radio drama. Most recently A Book of Silence was published by Granta in 2008 to considerable critical acclaim. In 2007 she moved to Galloway and has built herself a house on the moors above New Luce. A Book of Silence is partly a cultural history of silence and partly a personal memoir of her search of that elusive lifestyle.

Chris Gollon is an established name in British painting. Born London 1953, he has enjoyed many solo museum exhibitions in the UK, major museum acquisitions and public commissions. He has exhibited at Art Chicago and also with Yoko Ono, David Bowie and Gavin Turk in 'ROOT', a crossover exhibition of contemporary music and art created by Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, at Chisenhale Gallery, London. His work is attracting increasing acclaim in the national press and specialist arts press. His film collaboration with JABOD, entitled 'Kaleidomorphism One', was premiered in London at the East End Film Festival (2008). A Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Study, University of Durham, Chris Gollon lives and works in England, and is represented by IAP Fine Art, London. As she devotes herself to caring for her dying father, Mindy grapples anew with the complexity of their relationship. She questions whether she can be there for him and how to assert her own voice as her father's caregiver in his last days.

Moving, insightful and constructively provocative

Mindy Fried has written a wonderful and moving account of caring for her 97-year-old father in the last year of his life. She seamlessly interweaves colorful stories of her childhood and the divisive impact on her and her family of the McCarthy-era persecution of her locally famous (and infamous) Dad -- union organizer, Communist, actor, playwright -- with poignant accounts of her father's final days in an assisted living facility. And she brings her sociologist's lens, as well as a loving daughter's perspective, to bear on the difficult choices she and her sister had to make to ensure that their father had the most compassionate, humane, and loving care they could possibly provide. I highly recommend this book to anyone facing a similar challenge -- which, at one time or another, is pretty much all of us. Warm, touching, insightful and constructively provocative.

When we are old and growing infirm, we should all have advocates like Mindy and her sister. As befits a social scientist her story is rich with detail and interwoven with a lifetime of memories of her complicated family. Her father, a labor organizer, communist, playwright and professor, her mother an artist from a wealthy family in Buffalo, Mindy's life as a dancer, mother and social scientist. It is also a primer on how to navigate medicare, different levels of care, long term care insurance and so much more. A highly nuanced and riveting memoir.

Compelling, and insightful, I found this book full of human contradictions ---the pleasures, pains, and politics-- between different generations of a progressive and artistic Jewish family.

A worthy addition.

Decades worth of interviews with such contemporary visionaries as Stewart Udall, David Kammer, Melissa Savage and Paul Horgan comprise "Survival Along the Continental Divide", which explores issues of landscape, environment and culture in New Mexico. While regional New Mexico collections will likely be the most interested in this anthology, any college-level holding strong in regional American culture should also find it a worthy addition.
