EXCELLENT BOOK!

I bought this book for my boyfriend right after we discussed going vegetarian. I thought it was a cookbook to help ease us into a meatless diet, which we were considering primarily because he wanted to lose weight. Instead, it changed my boyfriend's life -- addicted, he kept coming into the room to read me sections. It gave us permission to be vegetarians (year and a half now) for ALL the right reasons -- love of animals, the environmental and hunger problems perpetrated by the meat industry, all-around health, etc. -- although he did lose 30 pounds without getting hungry! This is a perfect antidote for all the stupid Adkins/Zone/high-protein diets that are so unhealthy -- and are only excuses for people to keep eating too much meat (which is *any*, now that we've read this book). And it's so funny and light-hearted that you'll be an avowed vegetarian before you know what hit you. Give a copy to everyone you know! We're sold.

Splendid, immensely entertaining treatment of vegetarianism

I picked up this book primarily because I was interested in thinking about my diet. Although I had heard you could become a vegetarian without atrophying, drying up, and blowing away, as a former meat cutter I was skeptical. Moreover, I wanted a non-threatening introduction to this topic -- how imposing can a book be when you hold the ultimate power over the book? -- after all, you can always pitch it in the trash or, for that matter, use it to kindle your next barbecue.
But there's a catch -- this book is very, very funny, and once you start reading you just keep going for the laughs. That's when it sneaks up on you, and the author starts slipping in information about diet and meat, all of which gets you thinking. Okay, you'll say to yourself, maybe he's got a point but before it gets too serious let me just get through a few more of these jokes, especially the ones about the vegetarians. Then I'll put the book down.
As the force of the nutrition arguments starts to take hold, you begin to think that a change in your diet may just save you a few years -- or at least make your remaining years more pleasurable. At just about that time, your second thoughts start coming in -- do I have to eat tofu all the time? Are there any people not wearing tie-dyed shirts who are into this? Can I ever date again? The author is ready -- he provides some important insights, the frank truths about vegetarianism, and some good hints about living through the rough spots until you get used to it.
Now, you may expect me to say that I experienced an epiphany, that I am now a card-carrying vegan, and that I geech at the thought of eating "food with a face." Not quite --maybe my years as a meat cutter hardened my soul, maybe I just don't have the sort of robust sense of imagination required to appreciate fully the moral problems with eating meat. Nonetheless, I dramatically changed my diet, eliminated the consumption of most meat products and by-products, and improved my health markedly.
I think I could have read fifty books on nutrition, health, and diet and never ben affected enough by any of them to take steps to change my diet. This book sets out the vital information well enough, but this author's true gift is his ability to package the message in an entertaining medium to keep readers' attention spans long enough to have some effect.
This is a book I whole-heartedly recommend to any thinking reader.

Funny and enjoyable to read while full of truths

This is a fantastic book. After a difficult holiday with relatives I picked up this book and wished I had had it with me before the holiday had started. Since then I bought 8 more copies and have given them to friends and relatives alike. Information on the benefits of being vegetarian is presented in a non-emotional way with excellent facts to support the information. It covers issues ranging from nutrition to environment to factory farms. There are scenarios for dating, a whole chapter on dealing with relatives, and tips on how to be vegetarian during the holidays without going hungry. There's no meat-eater bashing in here. In fact, a lot of the writing is pretty funny. Its just a very straightforward presentation of information and armed with non-emotional information makes it so much easier to have a conversation with people who try to challenge your choices. I highly recommend this for anyone who is vegetarian/vegan as well as for anyone who loves/knows someone who has made such a choice and you want to understand why. Its absolutely one of the best books I've read and has helped me immensely. Plus there are some really funny parts. Enjoyable and quick to read

Uncovering Paul in a feminist perspective

Paul's letters and the letters in the Pauline tradition are hard for feminists to read. How are modern women supposed to take injunctions for women to not speak in church, to not teach or have authority over men, and to be subject to their husbands, while at the same time, and sometimes in the same letters, figure out what Paul means when he discusses how women should pray and prophesy, acknowledges without comment female workers in Christ (including a deacon and at least one apostle), and states in the Galations baptismal formula that we are neither male and female, but all are one in Christ Jesus?

Often, the solutions either are to privilege the verses that demean women, and "put them in their place," or to read them so much in their context that we fail to see any use for them in today's society. In truth, if all scripture is "inspired," then we have to wrestle with these texts, reading them both in context and in what they might mean today. Sandra Polaski manages to balance that line. For example, while she suggests Paul was a creature of his day, she points out that Paul the man was more complicated than many scholars are willing to recognize--he was both Jewish and at home with Greek rhetoric. Further, the roles of women in Jewish and Roman societies were more complicated than often given credit, that women did indeed sometimes have at least limited leadership roles.

Overall, Polawski makes two points that I was able to take away from this work, and for which I can recommend the book. First, througout Paul's rhetoric is the idea of "new creation." Whatever that looks like, we are all part of it, and as we are one in Christ, we are one body, with many diverse parts. And "birthing" this new creation requires an understanding of the feminine as well as the masculine of God, and of us. Second, we can extrapolate that, if Paul's main concernw was equality between Jew and Greet, that both can be equally saved in God's new kin-dom, we too can work to bring about equality in our spheres of concern and calling: racial equality, gender equality, sexual orientation equality, etc.

Polawski comes out and says not everyone will agree with her conclusions, and that's okay. I like that she says her way of reading Paul is not the only way. But, particularly for those who struggle with where Paul stands on female equality, this is a good place to start to draw one's own conclusions.

Interesting read

I had to read this for seminary, and it is a much better academic take on Paul than the title might suggest. I was initially skeptical, thinking this work was going to be another feminist rant against Paul the apostle. What I found unique about it was that the work was largely in favor and sympathetic of Paul and his Theology, while still coming from a feminist lens.

About the Author
Wilburta (Billie) Q. Lindh, CMA (AAMA), holds professor emerita status at Highline Community College in Des Moines, Washington, where she served as director and consultant to the Medical Assistant Program. During her tenure at the college, she received the Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year award for 2000. Lindh is a member of the SeaTac Chapter of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and has lectured at AAMA seminars and conducted in-service workshops on various topics throughout the country. She is a coauthor of respected textbooks on medical assisting, radiology, and ophthalmology, as well as the medical assistant chapter in the GUIDE TO CAREERS IN THE HEALTH PROFESSIONS.

Marilyn S. Pooler, RN, MEd, RMA(AMT), is a Professor in the Medical Assisting Department at Springfield Technical Community College, Springfield, Massachusetts. Marilyn has taught at Springfield for twenty years and previously served as chair of the Medical Assisting Department. She is on the certifying board of the AAMA task force for test construction and is a member of the executive board of the New England Association of Allied Health Educators. She is also a site surveyor for AAMA, reviewing medical assisting programs at schools and colleges seeking accreditation.

Excellent Book!

This book is excellent if you or anybody you know that is in the field or training to be a Medical Assistant. I am currently in the program at my local community college and love this textbook. Infact all my classmates call it "THE BIBLE" we use it so much and for everything. It teached you everything from how to send int insurance claim forms to putting on a pair of laytex gloves on!! I am definatly keeping this book when I am done with my program for further reference... ***** 5 stars !!!

Deborah L. Duvall and Murv Jacob also collaborated on The Great Ball Game of the Birds and Animals and How Medicine Came to the People (UNM Press). Duvall is the author of several books on Cherokee history and legend. Jacob, a descendant of Kentucky Cherokees, is an internationally known artist and pipemaker who has also worked on over 70 book and video projects. Jacob won the 2003 Oklahoma Book Award in the Design and Illustration category for his drawings in The Great Ball Game of the Birds and Animals.

Deborah Duvall and Murv Jacob have brought the old Cherokee animal tales back to life with their How Rabbit Lost His Tail and their other titles in this series from the University of New Mexico Press. The old tales, recorded previously in mostly pedantic prose for dusty scholars to peruse, have been rewritten by Duvall in lively and very readable English for young readers and old alike, and they are lavishly illustrated by Jacob. The tales involve Ji-Stu, Rabbit, the Cherokee Trickster, who embodies all the characteristics of man: pride, arrogance, greed, deceit ("The path to the dance grounds followed the river that ran through the Cherokee lands. In some places where the river curved, the water formed deep pools that reflected the river bank above. Each time he passed such a pool, Ji-Stu stopped just long enough to look at his reflection, for he was very proud.") He even occasionally shows courage.
You can't go wrong in picking up How Rabbit Lost His Tail or any of the other beautifully illustrated books in this series, for you will enjoy them, your children will marvel at them, and you may even learn something about Cherokee culture or about human behavior from reading them. (...)

My third-grader has collected all the Grandmother Stories created by Deborah L. Duvall and Murv Jacob so far, and this is her favorite! Ji-Stu the Rabbit lives up to his reputation as the Cherokee trickster in grand style as he figures out a way to steal Otter's fabulous shiny coat. It will go especially well with Ji-Stu's long, fluffy tail, illustrated to perfection with Jacob's pen. The drawings are rich and delicious, capturing Ji-Stu's unforgettable expressions for us all to enjoy. Jacob's artistry is not limited to the interior. Both the dust jacket and the end pages are generously covered with his fascinating look at the animals of Cherokee legend. As with many Cherokee stories, this one explains in a very entertaining manner how the rabbit now owns only a little tuft of a tail, and it teaches us the importance of being satisfied with ourselves as we allow others to shine in their own light.

It also teaches valuable lessons about pride, deceit and justice. The story is told in language simple enough for young independent readers, but would make an entertaining read aloud as well. The beautifully detailed black-and-white illustrations capture the essence of the story and set the scene for the traditional tale. Even the cover background and endpapers are intriguing. This book would be of particular interest to young people learning about or celebrating Native American cultures. Ages 6-12.

Deborah L. Duvall is an author of books and short stories on Cherokee history and tradition, a singer-songwriter, and a professional in financial management. She was born and continues to live in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, capital of the Cherokee Nation.

Murv Jacob, a descendant of Kentucky Cherokees, is an internationally known artist whose illustrations appear in over seventy book and video projects. He won the 2003 Oklahoma Book Award for Design and Illustration for his drawings in The Great Ball Game of the Birds and Animals.

Utterly delightful!

"Rabbit and the Well" is an authentic treasure of a book in voice and in art. Cherokee author, Deborah L. Duvall, is storyteller who captures both the delightful wit and the deep humanity of Cherokee legends in ethos as well as style. The illustrations are divinely, sublimely Cherokee, mysterious and humorous at once. I've spent more hours with this little book on my lap than I did with "Moby Dick." "Rabbit and the Well" is recommended for all kids and growups, too.

Another great story about Ji Stu the Rabbit

We wanted to give it 4 and a half stars. A good story about Ji Stu and his adventures. The lesson is that you should help your friends and not be a lazy rabbit. A good thing that Ji Stu had a friend in Otter or he would still be stuck to the tarbaby.

About the Author
Theodor W. Adorno (1903-1969) was a student of philosophy, musicology, psychology, and sociology at Frankfurt where he later became Professor of Philosophy and Sociology and Co-Director of the Frankfurt School. During the war years he lived in Oxford, in New York, and in Los Angeles, continuing to produce numerous books on music, literature, and culture.

Still a nourishing display of conceptual power.

Although out-of-print this is an event in the history of music comparable to primary musical works.It had to be Theodor Adorno a consummate intellect that created a new mode of contemplating contemporary art, music simply being the realm he knew more intimately,literature a close second. His prolific student from the late Fifties, Jurgen Habermas once said of Adorno, that he created theory spontaneously, simply within the course of a discussion, adept at synthesizing his thoughts as he spoke. But Adorno's importance for contemporary expression was assured,in that Adorno brought the complexity of philosophic,social and political thought to music. Something hardly done prior, and is only now within the past ten years beginning to be realized. See numerous studies on Adorno and his approach to speaking about music. To read the "Philosophy of Modern Music" is to understand Adorno's departures for his thought is the most exposed. Written in short cursive, aphorisitic-like paragraphs, almost approaching a sketch of a thought is to reveal a complexity, but one which engages his subject. The two polar opposites here are composers, Arnold Schoenberg(representing the progressive elements in music), and Igor Stravinsky(representing the backward-looking retrogressive elements). Adorno had considered the private artist working in seclusion as the highest form of rebellion, of subversion, for Adorno had contempt for the marketplace and how that magnetized and transformed art. Something of the market, in the late Forties was prevalent in jazz and film. Had Adorno lived into the age of computers and simulation,he would have seen to full extent how his thought has been realized in ever purified forms. Adorno thought Schoenberg's discovery of the 12-Tone dodecaphonic compositional method as a sign of progress. 12-Tone in a profound way was a synthesis, a conduit of the theoretical advancements of the history of music.It was both a beginning and an endpoint. But Schoenberg's method, althought quite new and unfinished allowed for all the parameters of music to be defined and developed, "Total Organization of the Elements of Music" is one paragraph here or section, "Differetiation and Coarseness" yet another referring to thinking about sound, as a sculptor would of his/her materials, shapting them, giving them form and direction. Stravinsky contrarywise indulged in looking backward, at the folksongs of his native Russia for music materials to be manipulated and the projection of sound without its deep attenuation. A view that is subjective now in retrospect,for Stravinsky was a grand orchestrator and a craftsman. But in Stravinsky, in particular his early period of the marvelously powerful ballet music, sound is pulverized,and is forced into suppressed forms,usually ashifting alternating suite of pieces,refocusing our short attention spans as required and, all in the projection of an image, a screeen for which the ballet takes place. But Adorno had takened issue with Stravinsky's subject matter as well as his technical means, a puppet in "Petrouska" one given over to a master without hope nor recourse.Likewise the "Rite of Spring" a virgin is simply sacrificed without recourse and we have the human image portraying the inevitability of natural forces, something Europe was about to experience first hand with the rise of fascism. These sections here are "Depersonalization" and "Fetishism of Means", explains Stravinsky's creativity stepping backwards within himself. In "Modes of Listening" Adorno refers to the "Shock" value that pummels the listener and the degradation of hearing into a music you merely submit to, whereas in Schoenberg there is more a sense of give and take,of the music allowing contemplative time. Again to my mind this is all relative, for these festures I find in both composers oeuvre. Still I find a conceptual power in Adorno,one that still nourishes today in the mileau of after-postmodernity.

The newer translation by Robert Hullot-Kentor is more comprehensible (to a non-German speaker) than this version. This was the only widely-available translation until recently.
