Abraham Joshua Heschel (1907-1972) was a preeminent scholar, acclaimed spiritual writer, and prophetic activist. Friedrich Holderlin (1770-1843) remains - despite continued interest from academics and translators - a less celebrated figure from the world of German Romanticism than Goethe,Schiller and even Novalis.A difficult poet,yes,but a writer who never courted difficulty or ingenuity to appear clever or ostentatious.
This volume from Continuum's German Library remains,to my knowledge,unique:it contains an esteemed translation into English of Holderlin's lyrical, epistolary novel, Hyperion;a wide selection of poems from committed translators like Michael Hamburger, Richard Sieburth and Christopher Middleton;a thought-provoking Introduction by volume Editor Eric L.Santer;and, if all that wasn't enough,a superb bio-chronology charting Holderlin's astonishing life, peppered with copious extracts from his letters.
There have been those who have doubted whether Hyperion is in fact a novel at all in the generally accepted sense of the term,and certainly that view would gain sympathetic readers of the first few pages of Volume One.David Constantine,whose own slim volume of translations of Holderlin's Selected Poems is an occasion of grace,insists with fellow critic Lawrence Ryan that this is,indeed, a novel and should be read as such - but does so with with a typically discerning qualification."...the meeting of such a mind (i.e.one that was uncompromisingly idealist)with such a form is a contradictory one,and the product is peculiar."
Persuasive and convincing though Holderlin's topographical details(of Greece), and political arguments may be,the truth is that this is a novel like no other.To even begin a paraphrase here would be entirely out of place:what can be said emphatically is that what Holderlin has to say in the form of a lyrical novel is entirely of a piece with the vertical reach of the poetry.This is a poet who knows the yearning of the "O famished,beleagured,infinitely troubled heart," - even,and perhaps essentially,of those hearts barely beating in the spiritually desolate wastelands of the post-modern West;a poet who anticipated Dostoevsky in seeing with luminous clarity the danger of reifying the State -"The state has always been made a hell by man's wanting to make it his heaven;"and surely the poet to whom Edwin Muir in his Autobiography was referring when he said:"[...]Dante,who spoke more directly from the heart than any other poet but one."To the already committed,this priceless volume merely confirms Holderlin's unique genius:for newcomers,there can be no better place to begin the journey.

One of the giants of ALL literature

Hölderlin today deserves to enjoy a much wider readership than ever before given the veneration afforded to him by none other than Martin Heidegger for whom he was the greatest of the great. Sadly, Hölderlin was to leave us only one completed novel before his final descent into madness and obscurity but, my goodness, it is a gem of the greatest philosophic and poetic depth. This is without doubt one of the truly greatest novels to have ever been written. Certainly there is the typically German influence of music on this contemporary of Beethoven, hence the idea of applying the structural principles of sonata-allegro form to the novel. Anyone familiar with the musicological musings of Nikolaus Harnoncourt will know that the principles of sonata form structure in music were originally grounded on the classical principles of rhetoric - the art of presenting arguments - with all of its origins in Aristotle and which was a corner stone of education at this time. At the same time Hölderlin was to enjoy friendship with none other the great Hegel himself, thus lending this novel a philosophical profundity perhaps unrivalled by any in history - even by Camus or Satre.

The novel is set on the backdrop of a classical Greece of ancient ruins but occupied by the Ottoman Empire. Hyperion yearns to reawaken the glories of Classical Greece but kindles Romantic dreams of fighting for the liberation of his homeland, and leaves his idyllic Mediterranean world and the love of his life to fight in the name of freedom. The story unfolds in masterly fashion, enriched with its perfect balance of a nostalgic dreaming after a lost Classical world, matched with a Romatic passion for freedom and is told in the form of letters exchanged between Hyperion and friends in his idyllic homeland, all of which provide grippingly intense reading from start to finish.

The final lengthy epilog is some of the most profound philosophical meditations to ever appear in a novel. You can see why he won Heidegger's veneration when you read them. In this age where in central Europe at least, Hölderlin's star only gets brighter, Hyperion is absolutey essential reading. This is without doubt my favourite novel of all time, a work of rare profundity akin to Beethoven's late string quartets - so esoteric yet utterly divine in the profundity of its utterance.

One of the giants of German Literature

While Holderlin's poetry is truly brilliant and is his link to modernism, his single novel 'Hyperion' is also a major artistic achievement. Much more profound than its close epistolary relative and predecessor 'Sorrows of Young Werther', 'Hyperion' contains some of the most inticate and elegant prose in all of literature. Holderlin successfully attempts to impose the sonata structure in music upon a novel, and, even if he wrote nothing else, he would still rank among the greatest of German writers. The above is not meant to devalue Holderlin's poetry - his best poems being ineffably beautiful and timeless - but is only intended to bestow upon 'Hyperion' a higher place in Holderlin's oeuvre.

The Whole Kit Carson Story

Kit Carson lived a life that many young men would have liked to have lived. He seemingly was in all the right places at the time that a nation was being born. He grew from a simple kid to being an American Patriot.
Simmons book cpatures the real Kit Carson, the man, the family, the life and times--it is not a novel, it contains 35 pages of documented footnotes--by one of the best historians of the west.
At a time when the slave trade was still happening, he raised several Indian children, along with his own, by buying the kids from the slave traders. It is a book that helps anyone understand time and place. The book has been nominated for a national award.

The Domestic Life of an American Frontiersman

Nobody in his era survived more adventures and did more hard traveling than Kit Carson. His dispatch duties during the Mexican War totalled 16,000 miles -- most of that by horseback. In the first six years of his marriage to his third wife, he spent only six months at home in Taos. Carson was restless, and also uniquely qualified to play a major role in the far-flung events taking place across the Western U.S.

That is by way of saying that Carson was hardly domesticated. Based on very limited information this book looks into Carson's life with his three wives. With the first, Waa-nibe, an Arapahoe woman, he seems to have enjoyed domestic bliss. After she died he took up residence with Making Out Road, a beautiful and willful Cheyenne woman in what proved to a relationship from hell. After escaping from -- or being thrown out of the teepee by -- Making Out Road, he married Josefa, a Mexican woman of respectable family from Taos.

It was apparently a good marriage -- although Carson was rarely there and, moreover, never earned any money. In the census of 1850, when he was 41 years old, the value of his property totalled just over $200. Carson, however, apparently was a loving and responsible parent. He put his half-Arapaho daughter in school in Missouri and raised not only his own children in Taos but adopted several Indian orphans.

This is a good book, as much about the comings and goings of Kit Carson, as it is about his family relationships. The author tells of the fate of his wives and children and has included a number of photographs of family members. There's a large literature about Carson and little information about him that has not already been explored, but this book gives a different slant on his life than other biographies.

A great history of gay & lesbian Latin(o/a) American art!

Sorry for the essentialism, but originally I was skeptical about what a European academic would say about gay Latin American art. However, the author resisted Eurocentrism here and others have described his previous work as very anti-racist. In this book, Bleys looks at Latin American art from 1810 to the present, with a chapter on art from gay Latinos in the US. Bleys examines Mexico, Brazil, Cuba, and Puerto Rico under his idea of Latin American. This may frustrate some. (I hear that Argentina has a rich history of both gay expression and repression. It doesn't come up here.) Still, given the geographic, linguistic, political, racial, and historical diversity among these four countries, I think Bleys made a great effort. Too, the discussion on lesbian art may feel scant to some, but I think Bleys tried his best. This book included a huge range of photos that aided the text. Social constructionists will love this book because Bleys emphasizes artists that reject Western ideas about gay identity and artists that problematize the gay/straight binary overall. Under this constructionism, Bleys uses the term "homotextuality" which he never defines well. This book has a terrible intro. Also, Bleys' timeline is shakey. (For example, the chapter on art from 1810 to 1910 discusses much art after 1910. The chapter about 1975 ot the present focuses heavily on works from the past five years.) This book is much more typical of an art text than it is gay studies or Latino studies. Nevertheless, it will make you think deeply about what is homoerotic art, who can be a homoerotic artist, and how race intersects with those questions. This was a veritabe encyclopedia of gay and lesbian Latin American art. I am beyond impressed with this work.

Most Christians say that they want to reach out and include more people in their church. But, how? According to Eric Law, a crucial step is to identify the "fear zone," and the "safe zone" from which your local church functions. The next step is to expand your congregation's "grace margin", so that it is large enough to truly welcome people that are considering joining your church.

I was especially moved by the first few chapters of the book which focus on our human tendancy to exclude others. "Exclusion is simple. Once we reject the others, we don't have do deal with them anymore. ... Inclusion involves a great deal of thinking and listening ..."

Anyone genuinely interested in church growth should read this book.

It addresses the questions that one may have about inclusiveness, in grace filled manner. I would refer anyone to read any of Eric Law's texts, they are filled with words of wisdom, practical applications and grace.

It's hard core Kabbalah

Okay, don't even think of wearing a red string and call yourself a student of the Kabbalah without reading this. On that note, that may be a tougher task than thinking you're like Madonna. The mystical concepts of the chassidism requires you know your Judaism, your alefs and what not. But if you do, be prepared to be inspired and led to greater awareness, if you don't fall asleep. In which case, as my friend the Shaman said, you need purification... because only those who are strong in spirit can conjure Binah (the Sefirot of Understanding) at this level without the body rebelling its control.

Paul M. Levitt teaches in the department of English at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He is also the author of Chin Music: A Novel of the Jazz Age and numerous books for younger readers and scholars.

Elissa S. Guralnick is professor of English, College of Music, at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Douglas A. Burger is associate professor of English at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Katherine Karcz, the illustrator, received a BFA from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, and an MA in art education from Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey. She has been working in commercial illustration for nine years and is currently teaching art in Clifton, New Jersey.

All my kids loved it!

This book was both educational and fun for all my kids. The young ones loved looking at the pictures, while the older ones enjoyed the stories. My one son who is under the recommended age group really seemed to enjoy it, and was encouraged to read over his age category.. I think younger kids would like this just as much if not more than their older peers.. I would definitely recommend this to a friend!

The weighty Word Books are Great for Kids!

Great book! I loved the first one and was eager to get this one when I heard it was published.
As an educator it is a great way to get children interested in new vocabulary. As a parent, it offers
a great educatonal way to bond with your chidlren. Even kids who do not like to read, will enjoy these short
funny stories.

The right words, given the right weight

My entirely family enjoys this book and its predecessor (The Weighty Word Book). The stories are engaging enough and our boys do remember the words because of them. As a parent we can use parts of the story to jog our boys memory with regards to the meaning of the word at hand.

The best part is, we are all learning new words and their proper meaning. It is so rewarding to see more and more of those words showing up in homework and creative writing.
